The annual National Cowboy Symposium & Celebration is one of the most exciting explorations into the traditions and customs of the American West. This week's featured local artist is Ashley Hayes. eptember 9, 10, 11 (repeats September 16-18, 23-25)….Lubbock Community Theatre presents: “Steel Magnolias” – LCT begins it’s 2011 -2012 season with this classic play written by Robert Harling and directed by Jake Morgan. The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. This classic play, which was made into an award winning film with Sally Field and Dolly Parton, is filled with a special quality to make the characters truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. September 10….Ready Aim Cure Water Balloon Fight Fundraiser -
The CURE Cancer Foundation invites you to be a part of Texas Tech’s Largest Water Balloon Fight to support and fund the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center cancer research lab. The event is open to all who wish to attend, ages 18 or older. Entry fee is $25.00 and includes 20 water Balloons, dunk booth, balloon launcher, live country music with featured artist William Clark Green, free food & T-shirts, auction, raffle and water activities and drinks 21 +. September 10….Registration Begins for GET FiT Lubbock
2011 – Get Fit Lubbock encourages the entire Lubbock community to gear up for 2011. Get a team of 4 friends together for an 8 week competition to eat healthy, exercise regularly and attend health/nutrition events. Registration begins Saturday, September 10th and the competition starts Monday, September 26th. Participants must be 18 years or older - no exceptions. Registration on-site/packet pick up/GET FiT Lubbock orientation will be held September 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., September 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and September 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Garrison Institute on Aging 6630 S. Quaker Ste: E. Come and go or stay and enjoy the food demo and orientation. Participants will taste the demo food and healthy snacks will be available. September 10….1st Annual Drives Fore Drama - Calling all golfers! Hub Performing Arts School presents the first annual Drives Fore Drama Fundraieser. Join them for a fun scramble as they raise money for the performing arts school. Register as an individual golfer, a team or a family team. Price includes green fees & cart, range balls, lunch and prizes for 1st through 4th teams. September 10….The Maize (Opening Day) [Note: Open weekends through November 26 and by special appointments/field trips through the week; see operating schedule and times below] - Fall is here and the Simpson family has created a new labyrinth that will challenge any maze goer! Come test your skills in the 12 acre cornfield full of twists and turns. This year’s design is a tribute to Buddy Holly and his 75th birthday. The Maize will give visitors the chance to see this startling creation and is also the perfect place to come pick your pumpkins for fall decorating and carving. They have a huge selection and varieties to choose from. It is the perfect adventure for families, school field trips, church groups, scouts, birthday parties, cooperate team building and company gatherings. So come be a part of Lubbock’s very own cornfield maize. In addition to the maize, you will find roasted corn, BBQ, rock wall, pumpkin patches, campfires, corn cannon, hay bale mazes, barnyard, concession and tent area. Maize admission - $8.00, non-maize admission - $4.00, (4 and under are free). Hayride, Corn Cannon, Cow Train- $1.00 each. Pumpkins are $1 - $15.00. Campfire reservation - $25.00. Hayride to Pumpkin Hollow - $5.00. By reservation: Tues-Thur 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. (School Field trips) and Tues-Thur 5 – 9 p.m. (Groups). September 10…..Cactus Theater presents: “Always...Patsy Cline” - More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically in a plane crash in 1963, the show is based on a true story about Cline's (Amber Pennington) friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger (Jane Prince Jones), who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The show's title was inspired by Cline's letters to Seger, which were consistantly signed "Love ALWAYS...Patsy Cline." Bring the entire family and all of your friends to experience Amber Pennington's beautiful rendition of Patsy Cline and Jane Prince Jones' uncanny comical wit of Louise in this fabulously produced production! September 10-11….8th Annual South Plains Balloon Roundup - Southwest Regional Hot Air Balloon Club is hosting a hot air balloon launch free to the public. 10 to 15 hot air balloons will launch at sunrise. Come out early and get close to the balloons before they launch! Patterson Park in Wolfforth, East US HWY 62/82 (Brownfield Hwy).

September 10-11….16th Annual Apple Butter Festival – The annual Apple Butter Festival and new “corn maze” again benefits the South Plains Food Bank and Meals on Wheel and other charities. This is a fun festival for the entire family with lots of apple picking in the orchard, hayrides, live music, space slide, craft booths, petting zoo for the kids, face painting, release of lady bugs in the orchard, green chili roasting, and new this year…a rock climbing wall in the trees. Get lost in the new corn maze, meet Johnny Appleseed. Come and meet Snow White who will be appearing from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. and enjoy a BBQ lunch, apple turnovers and ice cream. Live bluegrass, country, and gospel music will be offered both days. Performers include Paul Davidson, Joe Gillis, Kim Townsend and more. September 11….Forever Remember 9/11 Service - September 11, 2011 marks the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country. These attacks shook our country yet in the same breath illuminated the heroic sacrifice of our first responders. Trinity Church is hosting a service in the United Spirit Arena to remember those fallen during the attacks and to celebrate and honor the heroic first responders in the Lubbock Community. Additional thanks will go to our entire Medical community and all Branches of our Military personnel. This service will celebrate those men and women who go to work every day with the attitude of service and sacrifice. United Spirit Arena, 1701 Indiana Avenue; 10 a.m.

September 11….Prevent Child Abuse America Fundraiser – Help take action for children by participating in the House Party Weekend presented by Prevent Child Abuse America. The goal is to raise awareness and support advocates for children. This fundraiser will help raise much-needed funds to keep the work going. The staff at Elite Learning Academy is actively involved in this mission. In January, they lost a special 4 1/2 year old little boy. He was their student and step-son of one of their employees. He was brutally beaten to death by his biological father. They want to do everything they possibly can to prevent this from happening to another child. Please join them for this noble cause. There will be swimming, games and lots of food for you and your family to enjoy! There will be a raffle with tons of gift cards...even Texas Tech game tickets! September 11….Community-wide Family Forever Remember 9/11 Event - In remembrance of that unforgettable day, Trinity Church is hosting a free community wide family event to bring honor and awareness of our first responders. Trinity Church believes it is important that we remember, honor and thank them for their continuous dedication, committed service, and unfaltering bravery. This free family event is a celebration of all those men and women who go to work every day with the attitude of service and sacrifice. The event will include free food, live bands, inflatables, rock wall, spider climb and face painting. First Responders scheduled for demonstrations include Lubbock Fire Department, Lubbock Emergency Medical Services, Lubbock Police Department and Lubbock County Sheriff Department. Representatives for all the armed forces will be present, as well as AeroCare Medical Transportation Services. Trinity Church Main Campus, 7002 Canton; 5:30 – 8 p.m.
