August 11….Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase - This week's featured act is Amanda Shires, Indie/Country/Singer/Songwriter with roaring Fiddle Music. Performances are every Thursday evening from June 1 – September 1, 2011. The Summer Showcase experience is an entertaining and innovative environment, where patrons can enjoy original and unique Texas made music. Summer Showcase 2011 is free. There will be a cash bar and beverages available for purchase. No outside food, beverages or coolers allowed. Buddy Holly Center Meadows Courtyard, 1801 Crickets Avenue; 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

August 12….“Laughology” - Did you know that children laugh over 400 times a day? Do you remember the last time you laughed? Did you know that the body does not know the difference between a fake laugh and the real thing? You still get a dopamine release even if you’re faking it! Come and join in for a special screening of the movie Laughology (about the science of laughter) and a Group Laughter Session. This will be a great chance to experience the beneficial effects of laughter and connect with other like-minded folks seeking alternative ways to feel healthy and reduce the effects of stress). The cost is $5.00 along with a public laughter session, from 6-8. The Covenant Laughter club meets weekly on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the Covenant Lifestyles Centre (6th floor) and is always FREE. August 12…."Stars Under the Stars" with the Brad Leali Quartet and featuring singer Martha Burks - The Foundation for Music Education is announcing the 7th annual summer “Stars Under The Stars,” featuring the Brad Leali Quartet with Brad Leali on Saxophone, Claus Raible on piano, Giorgos Antiniou on bass, Alvester Garnett on drums, and joined by vocalist Martha Burks. The Quartet is captivating through the spontaneity and homogeneousness of the performance as well as with the communicative, non-verbal interaction of the four musicians. The band book consists, besides grand jazz classics, mainly of original compositions by the members.“Stars Under the Stars” is an evening concert benefitting music education scholarships that will include an hour of socializing with sensational food and drink from “Stella’s.” The traditional guest host and emcee will be local TV and radio personality Jeff Klotzman. The “Stars” this year are brilliant world-class jazz artists from the United States, Greece, and Germany! August 12….Cactus Theater Happy Hour / Eagles' Desperado Event - After work, come start your weekend out on the Cactus Marquee Patio during Happy Hour from 6 to 9 p.m. You don't want to miss this great summer happening, featuring live entertainment by West Texas' finest talents. This week's featured artist is Rachael Porter. Admission is always free and concessions will be available. Continue the fun from Happy Hour with the thrilling "Desperado" show inside the Cactus Theater. Toby Caldwell and the Lubbock Texas Rhythm Machine pay tribute to the most influential album in country-rock history, the Eagles' Desperado, playing the full album down from start to finish just like the original LP release. The second set will be a collection of the Eagles' all time greatest hits. Come hear a great night of music from the band that became one of the most influential bands of all time! August 12, 13….Wolfforth Library Railway Show - The SouthWest Trakers, a local N scale model railroad group, is having a show promoting n-scale model railroading with TTrak modules. Admission: Adults: 1 can of food or $1, children under 12: free with an adult. All proceeds are contributed to the South Plains Food Bank. Wolfforth Public Library, 508 East Highway 62/82 on the access road about ¼ mile south of the 82nd street overpass; Friday @ 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday @ 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

August 12-13; 19-20; 26-27….CATS Playhouse: "And Then I Wrote" -
In this riotous showbiz comedy by Jack Sharkey and Mel Buttroff and directed by Chris Davis, a producer, his secretary, and sundry associates try to re-write a serious epic drama by a neophyte playwright and turn it into a broad farce. A vicious gossip columnist tries to blackmail the producer into marriage while a scatterbrained actor erroneously creates the impression that the leading lady has died. The author, also an apprentice mortician, is appalled by the histrionics that accompany the opening of the Broadway show. As a columnist draws mistaken conclusions that the production is really a cover for a bizarre murder cult, the rest of the group foster this impression and substitute a lady undertaker in the role of the much-alive leading lady. Mistaken identities, romance and silly situations combine to keep the audience laughing through three acts of hilarity. To make reservations please call (806)792-0501. (repeats August 19, 20)….Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents “The King and I” - The production of The King and I, based on Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon will mark the return of actress Rose Frugé as Anna Leonowens. She has previously appeared with LMM in the roles of Laurie in the musical Oklahoma, Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music and Marian Paroo in The Music Man. In the challenging role of the King will be Justin Duncan, who is well known in Lubbock for his portrayal of the Big Bopper. All summer performances will be outdoors in the Wells Fargo Amphitheater in beautiful MacKenzie Park. The audience is encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and personal lawn chairs or blankets. Seating is on grassy terraces. Tickets are priced at $28 for center terrace, preferred seating and $20 for general admission. Prices include a service charge. August 13….Back To School Fiesta - Texas Tech University and the Office of Community Engagement are pleased to announce the return of the annual Back to School Fiesta. Each year the Fiesta provides the opportunity for members of the local and surrounding communities and their children to visit the Tech campus, learn about numerous educational, local and federal programs and initiatives, and receive free school supplies for the upcoming school year. Originally held in 2001, by the Texas Tech University Alumni group Raiders Rojos, throughout the past ten years the Back to School Fiesta has increased both in size and effort. Each year partners from various industries including higher education, community, health and nutrition and K-12, participate in the event, and provide information, resources, and contacts to the students and families who attend. The event this year will include an indoor and an outdoor fair. The indoor fair will host partner tables as well as seminars on financial aid and admissions, while the outdoor fair will feature interactive educational activities for students of all ages as well as free food, drinks and entertainment. August 13….Downtown Art Market – Summertime in Lubbock...what better way to get out and about than to come down to the market? This outdoor event features over 30 local artists and growers all showcasing their work. Booths will be set up in the Gallery, the Artlab next door, the Gallery garden and along the sidewalks on Buddy Holly. Paintings, leather work, metal work, crafts, produce and other unique gift items will be for sale. Come downtown and see what all the talk is about, meet your friends and celebrate this cultural district event! More local artists are encouraged to show their work in a booth. August 13….“Poker and Lace” (Held Over) - The Cactus Theater is postponing the opening night of Always...Patsy Cline. Poker and Lace will be held over for one more encore performance. August 13….The Maines Brothers Band - The Maines Brothers Band is reuniting on stage to bring you an energy-filled evening of live West Texas music. During the 1980s, the band created a unique style of music that infused a number of genres, including country, bluegrass and rock 'n' roll. The Maines Brothers Band has recorded eight albums. August 14….Butch Hancock in Concert - A world-traveling troubadour with a long string of recorded songs and albums, Butch Hancock has been called "one of the finest songwriters of our time" and is acknowledged by his peers and critics alike as one of the premier singer-songwriters Texas has ever produced.
