Happy New Year to All!

FRIDAY Only

January 7….First Friday Art Trail and Buddy Holly Center Free Event – The Buddy Holly Center invites the community to participate in Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail, a night that provides an opportunity to enjoy fine art, entertainment and refreshments at local art galleries. Every month the galleries involved in First Friday Art Trail work to promote fine art and outreach within the community of Lubbock. On this evening the Buddy Holly Center will be open free of charge from 6 – 9 pm for patrons to view its exceptional exhibits. The Center will provide free refreshments and a cash bar. Texas Works will be in the Fine Arts Gallery. This show focuses on the creative talents and productions of Texas Artists and over the past several years the exhibition has grown to include individuals with innovative styles and concepts. This year the exhibit will explore the works of three foreign-born female artists living in Texas today. Lahib Jaddo, of Lubbock, Sang-Mi Yoo of Lubbock, and Mirtha Aertker of Allen, Texas will be featured. Lahib Jaddo’s wood burning pieces were created in the past two years and feature a prominent single female figure, an “Archetype”. Sang-Mi Yoo’s installation and print media obscure the distinction between perception and reality, the past and the present, revealing the contradictions of our fixed way of seeing everyday life and values. Mirtha Aertker’s ceramic and steel pieces express the importance of being able to “adapt” to challenging life situations. Welcome to the Hub: 82 years of the Depot will be in the Depot Foyer and Buddy’s Bedroom will be in the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame. A gallery talk for Texas Works, featuring Sang-Mi Yoo and Lahib Jaddo has been scheduled from 5:30 – 6 p.m. in conjunction with the First Friday Art Trail. Buddy Holly Center, 1801 Crickets Avenue; 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY

January 7 and 8….Celebrity Attractions: "The Aluminum Show" - For more than seven years, talented dancers and actors have been brilliantly breathing life into silver and aluminum-toned industrial materials, mesmerizing audiences across the globe. In its second US visit in 2010, the 50-show tour received excellent reviews: "A fascinating, family-friendly, fun and interesting show...incredibly interactive from the front of the theatre all the way to the back... very visual... the energy is amazing... something I've never seen before" (Fox News TV); "The Aluminum Show does everything you can possibly imagine with its star element... kids will go crazy over this silver-and-black spectacle" (TheaterMania). The combination of dance, theater and puppetry, spiced with a healthy helping of humor, is the essence of creating this powerful spectacle. "The Aluminum Show" uses recovered materials from industrial factories that are re-used to build the set, dress the cast and interact with the audience. Industrial materials are given new and surprising contexts, as they transform into cast members. When visual effects, lighting manipulations and enchanting music are brought together, all senses are on high alert. And with sights and sounds that overcome any language barrier, this family-friendly show provides entertainment for anyone and everyone. Tickets are available at Select-A-Seat by calling 770-2000 or visiting www.ticketsage.com. City Bank Auditorium, 2720 Drive of Champions; Friday: 7:30 p.m., Saturday: 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
