August 19….Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase Concert Series
- The Buddy Holly Center is offering another hot summer of music and fun every Thursday evening. The Summer Showcase experience is an entertaining and innovative environment, where patrons can enjoy original and unique Texas-made music. Summer Showcase 2010 is free to the public. There will be a cash bar and beverages available for purchase. No outside beverages, coolers or food are allowed. Pete's Curbside will have food available to purchase.This week's performer is the Plain Brown Wrapper. Buddy Holly Center, Meadows Courtyard, 1801 Crickets Ave; 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.


August 19….Monthly '3rd Friday' Star Party
- The Museum of Texas Tech University and the South Plains Astronomy Club co-host a star party on the 3rd Friday of each month when weather allows. The star party is held at free of charge and open to the public. Since its formation in 1960, the South Plains Astronomy Club has provided opportunity for persons interested in astronomy and related subjects to communicate their ideas, experiences, problems, and interests. The club promotes activities, instruction, and research in astronomy and related subjects for club members and the general public. You're welcome to become a part of the South Plains Astronomy Club. August 20….National Ranching Heritage Center Gala
– The event this year will feature the musical theater production, “ My Cowboy’s Gift” starring Donnie Allison, Kenny Maines and Lesley Sawyer with music performed by Lloyd Maines, Richard Bowden and Terri Hendrix. The evening also includes a reception at 6:30 p.m., a silent auction and raffle. Award-winning chuck wagon cooks will prepare a full chicken fried steak dinner. The concert will be held in the historical park on a triple-level stage constructed against a high beam with an Eclipse windmill as part of the ranch setting. Reservations required. $50 for Ranching Heritage Association members. Tables for six will be $650 and for eight $1,000. Patrons can call Lance Rampy or Tim Bynum at (806) 742-2498 for reservations and memberships or go online at www.nrhc.ttu.edu. $10 raffle tickets are being sold for a charcoal portrait sitting by Santa Fe artist Paul Milosevich. August 20….35th Annual Texas Boys Ranch Telethon
- You are invited to watch on Channel 28 KAMC-TV or, even better, attend the live production at the Louise Underwood Center for the Arts at 511 Ave. K. There is no admission charge. This is a great family-friendly entertainment that makes a huge difference in the lives of the boys at Texas Boys Ranch. Come out and sit in the audience to enjoy some great entertainment...all for a great cause. 7 p.m. to midnight.

August 20-22 (repeats September 3-7)….Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents: “Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story"The music of Buddy Holly has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world and this show tells the story of the tragically short life of a young man from Lubbock, who - along with his high-school friends formed a band called the Crickets - turned country music upside down to create some of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs ever written. We share Buddy’s frustrations through his first recording contract; the excitement America felt when ‘That’ll Be The Day’ hit #1; his naïve determination to be the first white act to play the Apollo Theatre in Harlem; his whirlwind romance and marriage; concluding with the ill-fated ‘Winter Dance Party’ tour of the Midwest. August 21….2nd Annual Vamos a Pescar (Let's Go Fishing) - In an effort to encourage children and families to enjoy more family time and the sport of fishing, Los Hermanos, a collaborative group of men, organizations, and volunteers who value God, family, and community, will hold the second annual Vamos a Pescar (Let's Go Fishing) free fishing event. Registration is free, which includes lunch for registered participants, a chance to win prizes, gift bags for the first 500 families, and lots of fun. All children up to 17 years-old must be accompanied by an adult. Interested participants must pre-register by calling (806)792-1212 thru August 18th. Late registration will be held that morning beginning at 7 a.m. No fishing license will be needed during that designated time and in the designated area. Participants are encouraged to bring fishing gear and necessary items to protect themselves from the elements, and enjoying a day out. Last year over 1,200 individuals consisting of families, especially fathers and children, participated in the event. Buddy Holly Lake, N. University & Cesar E. Chavez Dr; 7 a.m.- 2 p.m.

August 21….West Texas Roller Dollz Fundraiser Carwash - Come out and support your local roller derby league! The West Texas Roller Dollz (WTRD) are holding a fundraiser carwash and want your support! August 21….Sounds of West Texas – Come and enjoy this classic country music show with a splash of gospel and pop nostalgia produced by Keith and Betty Smith. The featured performers will be Larry Allen, Jeff Bailey, Brittney Bennett, Steve Burrus, Danny Cadra, Mike Carraway, Country Club Band, Tanner Evans, Mary Fletcher, Marty Gilbert, Kaci Keltz, Kurt Kiser, Justin Lightfoot, Darryl Lippe, Donnetta Lippe, Boyd Martin, Bryan Martin, Donnie Martin, Jason Newton, Kallie Rogers, Shanna (Van Winkle) Sides, Hunter Sides, Reagan Sides, Brent Smith, Betty and Keith Smith, and Baxter Vaughan with Kurt Kiser as emcee. Special features include the Amistad Mariachi Band, Martin Country Band, and salute to Bob Wills segment. Tickets are on sale at Select-A-Seat and may also be purchased at the door. Tickets are $15 adults $7 children $10 college students, (ask about the group rates for 10 or more).
