August 7
(repeats August 13, 20-22; September 3-7)….Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents: “Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story"The music of Buddy Holly has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world and this show tells the story of the tragically short life of a young man from Lubbock, who - along with his high-school friends formed a band called the Crickets - turned country music upside down to create some of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs ever written. We share Buddy’s frustrations through his first recording contract; the excitement America felt when ‘That’ll Be The Day’ hit #1; his naïve determination to be the first white act to play the Apollo Theatre in Harlem; his whirlwind romance and marriage; concluding with the ill-fated ‘Winter Dance Party’ tour of the Midwest. Tickets available in advance at all Select-a-Seat outlets or by calling (806) 770-2000 or 1-800-735-1288. Tickets can also be purchased at www.selectaseatlubbock.com. All shows take place at Wells Fargo Amphitheater in Mackenzie Park. 413 E. Broadway, Gates open at 7 p.m. Shows begin at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY

August 7-8….Radio Controlled Model Air Show - The modelers and guests of Wings Miniature Aircraft Society of Lubbock welcome you to share their passion for military model aviation at this exciting event. Admission is $5.00 for adults, while kids 12 and under are free. Please take advantage of the canned food drive by receiving $1.00 off general admission for each donated canned food item (no limit) benefitting the South Plains Food Bank. Many of the aircraft in West Texas Warbirds are built from scratch or plans, or may be assembled from kits that are largely pre-fabricated. Often, modelers devote hundreds of hours to researching, engineering and constructing their model aircraft subjects before they are ready to fly. Some are advanced to expert radio controlled fliers with more than 20 years experience. A watchful eye can spot the solid skills of the more seasoned pilots. You can expect close viewing of the model aircraft and a full unobstructed view of the flying demonstrations. Portable restroom facilities will be available as well as food, drinks and other refreshments. It is recommended that spectators bring their own lawn chairs and sunscreen. Nostalgic era music, pilot interviews and expert narration of the aircraft in flight add interest and enjoyment to the event theme. Please understand this event is highly dependent on fair weather without stiff winds, in which flying activity may be limited. The highlight for spectators will be at noon on Saturday, August 7th, when the flying will stop and all the modelers line up the aircraft for viewing. West Texas Warbirds is a super event for families of school-aged children, Scouting and senior groups and will spark the interest of many. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs! Be sure to visit www.wingsmas.org for more information. The flying site in Abernathy is just a short drive North of Lubbock on Interstate 27. It is located just four miles East of I-27 on FM 2060 (Exit 21) at the Abernathy Municipal Airport. Watch for signs guiding you to the spectator and parking area.
