October 8….5th Annual Vino Festivo -
Vino Festivo, Lubbock’s premier art, wine and food festival, has become the largest fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock and the event includes a combination of art from local amateurs, professionals, and Little’s (BBBS kid art) which will be displayed and auctioned throughout the evening. The event will also include an array of food and wine samplings, door prizes, a live and silent auction with jewelry, a trip to Napa Valley, and live entertainment provided by Ad Hoc. All the money raised stays here in the South Plains to allow BBBS to serve more children from the local community. Tickets are $40 per person and include food and wine samplings along with live entertainment and should be purchased in advance, limited number of tickets available at the door. (also repeats Oct. 15)….“Love of Life” - Written in part by Jane Prince Jones....combining scenes from “I’m Herbert”, “On Golden Pond”, “Carl’s Doctor’s Appointment” and “Franks ‘n Beans”, this play is making a return engagement for two performances in October. This delightful comedy thrilled audiences in May and veteran Cactus actors Kurt Kiser and Jane Prince Jones once again offer a unique look at relationships from the very old to the very married to the working class. In a myriad of characters, these actors provide a fun show. Added to the fun are the talents of musician/singer/songwriter Jerry Brownlow as Charley, the narrator. “Love of Life” is a fun, off-the-wall comedy. This is a two-act comedy with no profanity and appropriate for all. Tickets $25. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave; 7:30 p.m.

October 9…."The Fall Classic"
All are invited to play in this 4-person golf scramble benefitting the Lubbock Cooper Little League. Even if you don't golf much, come out and have a fun time with everyone (there will be mulligans available to help your game). There will be great prizes for the putting contest, longest drive, closest-to-hole, hole-in-one contest (1st, 2nd & 3rd Place), plus participation giveaways. There will also be several prizes to win, like a $10,000 Pebble Beach vacation, Southwest Airlines tickets, golf club customization, free rounds of golf and more. October 9…."SOS" Singles Country Club Fiesta - The Lubbock Fun Club SOS Singles (Adults 50+) invite you to join them for a relaxing evening of good food, fun anddancing to “The Country Club” band. This band is not affiliated with the Hillcrest Country Club, that is just their name. The main ballroom is reserved just for the Lubbock Fun Club Singles. This is going to take the place of the regularly scheduled monthly dinner on the 1st Thursday. Tickets will be available at the door, however, you are encouraged to get your ticket early so the caterer can know how much to prepare. First, all of the children's books are missing from the library, then, someone has taken some pages from Granny Possum's storybook! Was it Queen Cupcake, Rumplestiltskin, a witch, a giant or a band of pirates? Never fear, the greatest fairy tale detective is on the case: Nick Tickle to the rescue! Written by Caroline Francke, this classic tale is directed and adapted to the Cactus stage by Jane Prince Jones. This romp on stage treats Cactus audiences to a wonderfully fun evening. Most people can relate to the chaos that surrounds the planning of a wedding and an ensemble cast breathes new life into this family comedy. Cactus favorites Kurt Kiser and Jane Prince Jones star as the parents of the bride with the outrageously funny Donnie Allison as the over-the-top wedding planner, Franck. This stellar cast is rounded off with KCBD News Channel 11 anchor Christy Moreland and an amazing group of supporting actors. “Father of the Bride” is enjoyable for all ages, giving us an evening to love each other a little more. October 9, 10, 11…. American Kennel Club All Breed Dog Agility Trials - The South Plains Obedience Training Club of Lubbock will be hosting three days of American Kennel Club All Breed Dog Agility Trials. Approximately 200 pure bred dogs from surrounding states will be judged at this event, many of which are the top agility trained dogs in the country. Agility is one of the newest AKC events and is open to every breed. Dogs must be at least one year old to compete. In an Agility Trial a dog demonstrates its ability to negotiate a complex course that will include a walk over a bridge, jumping through objects, going through tunnels, weaving through a line of poles and pausing on command. There are different height categories so each dog is tested fairly on the course. Each exhibitor and dog team will be judged at one of 3 different levels of competition: Novice, Open or Excellent. Dogs competing in these classes are working toward AKC Agility titles. There will be free canine educational material available at these trials. No admission fee for this fun filled and educational event. Agility is a fast paced sport that is exciting for the dog, handlers and spectators. October 10….Downtown Art MarketA once-a-month market held in the Tornado Gallery Garden and spreading on to Buddy Holly Avenue. The Downtown Art Market is an effort to unite artists of all genres, musicians, writers, potters, actors, painters, gardeners, chefs, cooks, singers, dancers, hackers, tinkerers, renewable energy gurus and philosophers...to buy, sell, trade, talk...even teach their arts and skills in a communal space. It is free and open to the public. This month part of the street will be closed to traffic and stands will be set up in the street. This is the first step in making the market into a full-blown street festival atmosphere. Also enjoy the strolling musicians Wade Parks and Bobby Saied. October 10….Girls' Disney Princess Cookie Party -
Princesses of all ages are invited to dress in your crowns, heels and gowns or your favorite royal attire and have your picture made with a Disney princess! You will also get to decorate your own Crown cookie and are encouraged to enter a drawing for one of our six new Disney Princess cookie bouquets. Cost is $10 for the cookie and the picture. October 10….Kids' Pop Star Party - Kids, let’s party like rock stars! Hodges Community Center is now taking registrations for a Pop Star Party. This event is for fans ages 3-12. There singing, dancing, and fun activities. The cost is only $10 per child. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. For more information, call the Hodges staff at 767-3706. October 10, 11….Apple Country Orchards Annual Pumpkin Fest
- Both days there will be hayrides in the orchard, lady bug releases, green chili roasting, raw honey pouring, lots of pumpkins all sizes and shapes, face painting, lots of pre-picked apples, and lots of fun for the entire family. October 11…. Vesper Concert Series - Carol Williams has been the San Diego Civic Organist since 2001 and has thrilled audiences worldwide with her stunning artistry. October 12….Jordan World Circus – Come enjoy the lions, tigers and bears and ride the elephants and ponies. There will be daredevil riders, aerialists, acrobats, and much, much more. Tickets can be purchased at the circus box office one hour before show time. Kids 12 years and under are free with a pass. Passes available at many businesses around town. Fair Park Coliseum, South Plains Fairgrounds; 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Ladies Invited to Attend Luncheon Focusing on Healthy Living

Jan Tilley Slated To Speak
at Women's Club Oct. 13th


Are you lacking energy? Are you tired of being tired? If you are ready to make a fresh start, Jan Tilley, registered dietitian and author of “Getting Your Second Wind”, has the direction you’ve been seeking.
Tilley will share her “back to basics” approach using real food that you can live with forever at The Lubbock Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC) meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The luncheon is set to begin at noon and will be held at the Lubbock Women’s Club located at 2020 Broadway. Tilley is president of Jan Tilley & Associates, a nutrition consulting firm promoting healthy living through nutrition and fitness. The company began in 2006 and is built on Tilley’s 20 years of experience in the food and nutrition industry.

Tilley’s book “Getting Your Second Wind” focuses on how to build a healthy, balanced life based on healthy eating, physical activity and a positive attitude. At the AWC luncheon, she will share healthy living information as well as real-life stories for all who are looking for their path to wellness. Admission to the AWC luncheon is $18.
