May 28…Kids' Summer Reading at the Lubbock Public Library - The Lubbock Public Library is pleased to announce that their Summer Reading Program will begin on Thursday, May 28. Children going into the fifth grade and under can pick up a reading log at any of our three locations. Each child who reads 10 books by August 7 will receive a prize. There is also a Teen Summer Reading Program for students going into grades 6 through 12. The library will have special programs for kids and teens all summer long - visit the library website at www.lubbocklibrary.com for more details. For more information, call 775-2838.

May 28….Summer Showcase Concert Series - The Buddy Holly Center is gearing up for another hot summer of music and fun with the 2009 Summer Showcase concert series which is free to the public. There will be a cash bar, as well as food and beverages available for purchase. No outside beverages are allowed. This week's music headliner is Wendy Colonna. Buddy Holly Center Courtyard, 1801 Crickets Avenue.

May 29….Wild Safari: A South African Adventure at the OMNI Theater (Opening Day) - This summer, the OMNI Theater at the Science Spectrum invites you to, “Go On Safari”, in the all new giant screen film, Wild Safari: A South African Adventure. Keep you hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times as you take the trip-of-a-lifetime, searching the African Bush for... “the Big 5”; elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards and Cape Buffalo. Come face-to-face with these amazing, majestic and sometimes dangerous creatures like never before. Wild Safari gives viewers a new appreciation for the beauty and grace of creatures that, for some, have only recently been brought back from the brink of extinction. With a real Park Ranger and Zoologist, as well as legendary trackers as your guides, you’ll journey through the most extraordinary wildlife preserves in South Africa! Wildlife is seen up-close and personal on the game reserves of Addo/Shamwari, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Madikwe, Kgalagadi and Kruger National Park. May 29-30…."Journey to the High Places" - A "must see - must hear" event based on the book Hinds' Feet on High Places. An original and elegant retelling of the classic spiritual allegory by Hannah Hurnard - performed as a story ballet with a select choir singing the narrative. This inspiring tale follows the young crippled girl, Much Afraid, as she travels to the High Places at the invitation of the Shepherd. Strengthened by the gift of his promises, she faces danger and difficulty, and discovers how the enemies of the soul can be overcome when highest love fills the heart. Original music and orchestrations by CITA music director, Randall Hinds and original choreography by CITA ballet artistic director, Lara Hinds. Guest artists from “Ballet Magnificat!” (Jackson, MS) and “Arts Revealing the Son” (Oklahoma City) will perform with the students and company of CITA Ballet. Members of the select choir are from Lubbock and surrounding communities. General admission: adults - $12 children 12 & under - $6 discounts for large families & groups of 20 or more. May 29-30….Lubbock Unwrapped “A Tribute to The Music of The Eagles” - This week’s guest host is Donnie Allison. A tribute to The Music of the Eagles featuring Jason Fellers backed by the Lubbock Texas Rhythm Machine with special guest Mary Fletcher. Starring comedy cast includes Jane Prince Jones and Kurt Kiser. Special musical guest is West Texas singer/songwriter Hannah Jackson. Tickets are $25. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave; 7:30 p.m.


SUNDAY

May 31….Auditions for the Melodrama in the Park - There will be two one-acts for this year's performance: "Nobody Sleeps" by Guernesy LePelley (1 man and 4 women) A burglar is attempting to rob a household but keeps being interrupted by the young ladies of the household and there would-be-mystery-novelist mother who proceed to critique his abilities. "The Great Western Melodrama" by Florence Huntington Morris (4-5 male and 3-4 female - ish.) The crew of the show take over after the cast is quarantined by sudden illness to present the timeless story of true loves poetical triumph over villainy in a handlebar mustache in a little town way out west. Melodrama in the Park perfoms July 9-11 at Maxey Park. Auditions will be cold readings from the script. Direction is by Beth Bass, produced by CATS Playhouse . CATS Playhouse, 2405 34th; 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

May 31….First United Methodist Church Vesper Concert - The next Vesper Concert, Magnificat will feature Nicholas White conducting the FUMC Chancel Choir, soprano Terry Hawkins and Caprock Pro Musica in his setting of the Song of Mary. White is a Grammy nominated composer and conductor, as well as a versatile organist, pianist and singer, with experience in many different styles of music. He lives in Sturbridge, MA, and is artistic director of Joyful Noise, Inc. and organist and choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church, Torrington, CT. He is also Founder and Music Director of Tiffany Consort. White’s Magnificat was premiered by the FUMC Chancel Choir at Washington National Cathedral in 1997. The choir is pleased to perform the work once again in Lubbock, joined by local orchestra, Caprock Pro Musica and soprano soloist, Terry Hawkins. Caprock Pro Musica will also perform selections during the concert. A reception will follow the concert, during which you may greet Nicholas and the performers. First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway; 5 p.m.

Sheridan's Frozen Custard (outside on a flat bed trailer, no less!) from 8-11 p.m., at 5101 82nd Street.

Saturday May 30... BLUESETTE MERCI...(sounds like cajun music to these ears)...performs live at River Smith's Chicken and Catfish from 7-9 p.m. at 8222 University Ave.
