August 11….Cactus Theater Presents: Modern Film Classic: "La La Land" (PG 13) - La La Land is a 2016 American musical romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle, and starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. The film's title refers simultaneously to music, the city of Los Angeles, and to the idiom for being out of touch with reality. Chazelle wrote the screenplay in 2010 but did not find a studio willing to finance the production without changes to his design. Following the success of his 2014 film Whiplash, the project was picked up by Summit Entertainment. La La Land received critical acclaim. Critics praised Chazelle's screenplay and direction, Gosling and Stone's performances, Justin Hurwitz's score, and the film's musical numbers. It won in every category for which it was nominated at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, with a record-breaking seven wins, and received 11 nominations at the 70th British Academy Film Awards, winning five. It received 14 nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, tying the record for most nominations with Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950), and won six Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Actress (Stone), Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song ("City of Stars"), and Best Production Design. August 12…..Cactus Theater Presents: An Evening with Marcia Ball: Louisiana-Swamp-Boogie-Jazz-Rock-Blues! - The title track of Marcia Ball’s latesta lbum, "The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man" - is an irresistible tale of true love at the traveling carnival. It’s a story that nobody but Ball could spin, filled with vivid details, universal truths and a rambunctious sense of fun and desire. With raucous horns punctuating Ball’s legendary piano playing and emotional, melodic vocals, the song kicks off a CD of eleven dazzling originals and one stirring cover. The release mixes Ball’s Gulf Coast blues, New Orleans R&B, swampy Louisiana ballads, and jumping, Tex-Mex flavored zydeco into a one-of-a-kind musical gumbo - a sound she has been perfecting over the course of her legendary career. Her love of the road has led to years of countless performances at festivals, concert halls and clubs all over the world. The Texas-born, Louisiana-raised musical storyteller’s groove-laden New Orleans boogie, deeply soulful ballads and rollicking blues have won her an enormous, loyal and still-growing fan base. She’s received a total of ten Blues Music Awards (and a whopping 44 nominations), seven Living Blues Awards and five Grammy Award nominations. She has been inducted into both the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame. Always a songwriter of great renown, Ball delved deeper into songwriting than she ever had in her career with her Grammy-nominated 2010 Alligator Records release, "Roadside Attractions", creating one of her best and most personal albums. On 2014’s "The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man", Ball continued that trajectory, drawing her listeners deep into her music with instantly memorable melodies and imaginative imagery. Her songs paint vibrant musical pictures richly detailed with larger-than-life characters, regional flavors and colorful scenes both real and imagined. An engaging entertainer, Marcia Ball is a fan's delight and the Cactus Theater proudly welcomes her back for what promises to be a wonderful evening of musical magic. Reserved floor seats $20-$25; standard balcony $15. Box office open 3:00-5:30 p.m. daily or call (806) 762-3233 or order online at cactustheater.com. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave. 7:30 pm.
