March 18….LHUCA: The Life and Art of Marc Chagall with Christian Conrad - Marc Chagall (1887-1985): A pioneering artist in the use of color, Chagall created images that continue to radiate into the contemporary. An immigrant to Paris, Chagall combined images from his Russian Jewish heritage with the contemporary modern styles of the
Avante-Garde. Chagall’s life was constantly influenced by the politics of his time: he moved from Russia to Paris and eventually the United States as he narrowly escaped the Nazi war machine. In the post war years, Chagall continued to create art, including some of his best-known works made in stained glass. Saturday Lectures at LHUCA is an informal conversation over the life and work of contemporary artists. It’s a stress-free opportunity to examine the art and ideas that underlie much of the modern art world. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and join the conversation. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Peck, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture. In 1995, the film was listed in the National Film Registry. It also ranks twenty-fifth on the American Film Institute's 10th anniversary list of the greatest American movies of all time. March 19….Cactus Theater Presents - Big Band! The Legendary Tommy Dorsey Orchestra - In Big Band history, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands. It could swing with the best of them, and no other band could come close to Tommy's when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey, "The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing", was a master at creating warm, sentimental, and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly. Frank Sinatra's career blossomed with Dorsey, and, with Sinatra's vocals, the band became more successful than ever. There was Sinatra's "This Love of Mine", Jo Stafford's "Embraceable You", the Pied Pipers' and Sinatra's "There Are Such Things", "Just As Though You Were Here", "Street Of Dreams", and "Oh, Look At Me Now". Their biggest hit of all, the one that established vocal groups forever, was "I'll Never Smile Again". The Band was at its best in this decade. In the summer of 1941, it outranked every other band to finish first in one of the most indicative of all popularity polls, Martin Block's Make Believe Ballroom contest. The music world lost Tommy at an early age, but his legacy of great music has transcended time. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra still represents explosive and swinging Big Band entertainment at its very best. Tickets only $25 for reserved floor seats; $20 for standard balcony. Box office open Mon-Fri: 3:00-5:30 pm, One hour before show on Sat /Sun. Call (806) 762-3233 or order online at Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave: NOTE: Special EARLY 7:00 PM START TIME for this SUNDAY EVENING concert!
