February 12....Eric Johnson: An Evening of Acoustic Guitar and Piano - Thirty years after the release of his breakthrough album, Tones, guitar legend Eric Johnson is releasing his first all-acoustic solo effort, aptly titled EJ. Long known for his painstaking approach to making records, Johnson took a more immediate approach for EJ, which was recently released on October 7. Most of the material was cut live in the studio, with some songs even being sung and played at the same time. The result is an album packed with honest realism and organic emotion. "It’s another side of me that I’ve always dabbled in but never really presented in my records or career. Usually, you’re out doing your thing and get known for something that becomes your main deal and you just go with it. Meanwhile, I’ll be sitting at home in my studio just doing what I enjoy. At some point, I decided to put things out and see what happens," Eric says. Box office open daily 3:00-5:30 pm or call (806) 762-3233 or order online at cactustheater.com. February 14....Romance Film Classic: “Casablanca”
- This 1942 American romantic drama film was directed by Michael Curtiz and based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison’s unproduced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick’s. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid; it also features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson. Set during World War II, it focuses on an American expatriate who must choose between his love for a woman and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.
Although "Casablanca" was an A-list film with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary. It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. Casablanca was rushed into release to take advantage of the publicity from the Allied invasion of North Africa a few weeks earlier. It had its world premiere on November 26, 1942, in New York City and was released nationally in the United States on January 23, 1943. The film was a solid if unspectacular success in its initial run. "Casablanca" went on to win three Academy Awards – Best Picture, Director (Curtiz) and Adapted Screenplay (the Epsteins and Koch) – and gradually its reputation grew. Its lead characters, memorable lines and pervasive theme song have all become iconic and the film consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films in history. Reserved seat tickets only $5 for this special Valentine's evening screening! Box office open daily 3:00-5:30 pm or call (806) 762-3233 or order online at cactustheater.com. Community Spotlight:
LHUCA Marks 20-Year Milestone with Monumental Artists Exhibition

February 3 – March 25….Celebrating 20 Years of Art - In honor of its twentieth anniversary, LHUCA has invited over one hundred artists who have contributed to the history of its campus to contribute a piece of art for this exhibition. The diversity of this collection speaks to the achievement of this space as a catalyst for providing unique visions of art to the Lubbock community. Key to the success of this organization were the efforts of Louise Hopkins Underwood and Neal Hanslik, who headed a group that researched locations and art centers in the local surroundings. The origin of the main building begins with its transformation from the City of Lubbock Fire Administration building and Firehouse #1 into a non-profit, multi-disciplinary art center in 2000. The four main galleries of the center host over 5,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space, and functioned as a beginning to LHUCA's expanding campus. LHUCA, 511 Avenue K.
