August 4 ….2016 Summer Showcase Series - The Buddy Holly Center is gearing up for another summer of music and fun with the 2016 Summer Showcase Concert Series. This week, Gypsy Jayne plays her special brand of Jazz Rock. Summer Showcase 2016 is free to the public. There will be a cash bar, food and beverages available for purchase. Please, no outside beverages are allowed. Performances are every Thursday evening from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm in the Meadows Courtyard, 1810 Crickets Avenue.

August 5….First Friday Art Trail - See the regular art venues...plus the exciting monthly additions showcasing art and artists downtown and throughout Lubbock. Catch a trolley or bus at many of the locations or pick up a FFAT map at any of the venues to see the art that can befound throughout the community each month during the event. First Friday Art Trail trolleys run continuously in downtown Lubbock during FFAT hours. Trolleys are free and you will find a "trolleyteer" on each trolley who is a treasure trove of info about FFAT and the arts in Lubbock and will help you navigate with ease. August 5….Cactus Theater Open House - Join us for a "come and go" visit inside the Cactus Theater as we showcase some new enhancements to the theater...including new artwork being added at the base of the stage area! We'll showcase renowned local artist John Russell Thomasson and his contributions to the Cactus surroundings through his beautiful murals and display his other works as well. The Cactus concession stand and ticket booth will be open for purchases as well. We look forward to visiting with the many friends, longtime patrons and NEW VISITORS who perhaps have never enjoyed a visit to Lubbock's only vintage theater space. Make plans to stop by and see the exciting new offerings available at the Cactus and learn more about new concert bookings at this unique OPEN HOUSE event. Moonlight Musicals Presents: "Carousel" - For the finale of Lubbock Moonlight Musicals 11th summer season, the timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel, will be presented in the beautiful Moonlight Musicals Amphitheatre. Carousel was the second musical penned by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with their first being Oklahoma! in 1943. Carousel opened on Broadway on April 19, 1945, with an initial run of 890 performances. Featuring such well-known tunes as “If I Loved You”, “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Carousel is a musical masterpiece with a timeless message of love, hope, and forgiveness. August 6….Lubbock Downtown Farmer’s Market - Held each Saturday, June through October, this unique gathering of area producers, specialty food and beverage providers and select artisans specializing in homegrown or homemade. Held in the Depot District area, this weekly event has become a highlight of the summer months and offers something for everyone. August 6….The Life and Art of Pablo Picasso with Christian Conrad - Saturday Lectures at LHUCA is an informal conversation over the life and work of contemporary artists. It’s a stress-free opportunity to examine the art and ideas that underlie much of the modern art world. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and join the conversation. August 6….Copper Breaks StarWalk - The nationally acclaimed public astronomy program at Copper Breaks State Park, continues its popular naked-eye presentations with Sky Guide Terry Paridon who will lead participants in an exploration of the night sky beginning at sunset, around 9:30 p.m., in Big Pond Campground. In addition to the after-dark program, Sky Guide volunteer Earl Foster will offer Sun Fun, beginning at 5 p.m. Sun Fun offers the public rare views of our own star, the Sun, through telescopes fitted with filters for safe viewing. Through the afternoon, visitors will be able to view “Journey to the Stars” in the park headquarters. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, Journey to the Stars I s a story of life and death of stars and their formation, including our own sun. Nighttime observing begins after sunset. Paridon begins the program with a tour of the darkening sky- the original StarWalk. Blending science with history, legends, and lore, Paridon takes the public on a trip through major constellations, and introduces the “star-hopping” technique to find stars and other interesting objects. After the StarWalk, the public is invited to view various dark-sky objects through the park’s binoculars and telescopes with the help of knowledgeable SkyGuides. The 2016 slate of StarWalks includes Saturday presentations set for , August 6, September 3 , and October 1 , weather permitting. Upon entering the park, StarWalk signs will direct visitors to Big Pond Campground and parking. The quarter-mile walk into the observing area is on lighted asphalt, and extra assistance for the handicapped is available from park personnel. August 6….11th Annual Hub City Beach Party - Get ready for some more fun in the sun with more games planned, this year is not to be missed! There will be many activities and games to enjoy during the evening. Another featured event is the treasure hunt called ‘The Lost Shaker of Salt’! A variety of foods and drinks will be available as well. The event will also have fun games such as a hula hoop contest, limbo contest and more!
