The purpose of Fiestas Patrias Lubbock is to celebrate Mexican Indpendence Day by embracing Hispanic heritage in art, dance, music and the wonderful flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine. The event schedule includes a scholarship pageant with a wonderful show featuring insightful Hispanic music and dance, a lively and colorful parade down historic Broadway. September 13 - 16….The Friends of the Lubbock Public Library Fall Book Sale - There is no equivalent in the region to find such wonderful treasures at such a low price (regular paperbacks are $0.50 and regular hardcovers are $1.00). Since this early spring volunteers have spent thousands of hours sorting tens do thousands of books and other generously donated items. The basement of Mahon Library has become an amazing Ali Baba’s cave that will rejoice readers of any age. You will be able to find children’s books, fiction and nonfiction books, a large selection of “Better Books,” books on tape and CD, VHS and DVDs, music on vinyl, tape and CD, art works and this year a new “Best Books” section. September 13th is the members only sale from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. New members and families may join for only $10.00 , students for $5.00 and businesses for $100.00 at the door. Please, note that the Friends of the Lubbock Public Library will accept cash or checks only; payments by debit and credit cards will not be allowed. All proceeds benefit the Lubbock public libraries. September 14….9th Annual Strut for the Mutts - The Strut for the Mutts is a 1-mile walk around Higginbotham Park, and this year we are also adding a 5K fun run/walk! The run begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. You are welcome to attend both or only one if you wish. The Haven brings 15-20 adoptable Haven dogs for the event, and people can sign up to walk them (or this year run with them) during the event. If you are interested in walking a Haven dog, you do have to pre-register. To register for the Strut, you have a number of options. You can go to the Haven’s website, www.havenacs.org and click on the registration form on the front page (you can even pay via Paypal securely on site!), or you can go to any area United Supermarkets, J&B Coffee, veterinarian clinics, or pet groomers to pick up a registration form. And don’t forget…we always have a large raffle drawing at the conclusion of the 1-mile walk! Every registered participant receives a raffle ticket. The Haven Animal Care Shelter Inc. is a non-profit, no-kill animal sanctuary that provides sanctuary for homeless, abandoned and injured animals...so please come and join in the Strut for the Mutts. All proceeds from this event go directly to caring for the beautiful animals at the shelter. Higginbotham Park, 19th Street and Vicksburg Avenue; 8 a.m.

September 14….Walk To End Lupus Now - Registration begins at 9:00, walk start at 10:00 amThis fun family, pet friendly event benefitting the Lupus Foundation of America, North Texas Chapter is the signature event of the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. In more than 70 cities and towns across America thousands of people walk to make a difference in the lives of all people affected by lupus and raise essential funds for education, support services, programs and research. September 14….Downtown Farmers/Art Market - Time for the Farmers Market! Through the end of season in October, the market will be open twice every month on the second and fourth Saturdays. That's twice the chances to come see and purchase the finest in local art and the freshest in locally produced foods and produce. There will be lots of vendors including Sunburst Farms, Crazy Hoe Farms, Harden Farms, Apple Country and Crusty's Wood Fired Pizza. Folks, this one will be big! September 14….Lubbock Municipal Garden and Arts Center Fall Arts and Crafts Festival - The Fall Arts Festival is a family-oriented arts festival that includes more than 100 vendors selling handcrafted items, all day entertainment on the main stage, art demonstrations and concession booths. This event has traditionally attracted more than 10,000 visitors and this year we are hoping to make the festival bigger and better than ever. Vendors have traditionally offered such items as jewelry, clothing, hand made items and other fine arts and crafts. The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival is fun for the entire family! This annual event held every September includes arts and crafts, exhibits, kid’s area, demonstrations, entertainment, and food. Free Trolley Park and Ride service from Clapp Swimming Pool at 46th and Avenue U and Hodges Community Center parking lots. Booths available. Space limited! Admission is free! September 14….Arboretum Second Saturday Program: “The Flora of Kenya and Malawi” - Dr. Cynthia McKenney, Professor of Horticulture and the Associate Chair of the Department of Plant and Soil Science at TTU will present this program based on her trip to Africa this summer. It should be a fabulous program, as many plants that will grow in Africa are suited for West Texas! Cynthia was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and is currently serving as President of our Board of Trustees. Admission is free. The Arboretum will be selling packages of spring-flowering bulbs at great prices! Look for our booth at the Fall Festival this Saturday, and stock up on bulbs. The Fall planting season is just a few weeks away! Buy yours bulbs at our sale, and the Arboretum gets the profits instead of some no-name box store. This is a great way to support the Arboretum at no additional cost to you. Arboretum’s Interpretive Center (little red brick house art 42nd Street and University Ave); 10 a.m.

September 14….Children's Home of Lubbock's Annual Fall Festival - The Annual Fall Festival is held on the campus of The Children's Home of Lubbock each September. In addition to being a fund-raiser, this event serves as an opportunity for our friends and supporters to enjoy our beautiful campus and get to know students and staff. Features include inflatable games, and horse-drawn carriages from Leon and Greg Pinkert. There will be a barbeque meal (lovingly served-up by Gus and Phyllis Menendez), our children's parade (hayride, carriage, train, tractor, bicycles, floats, fire engine and other interesting vehicles), a wonderful silent auction and bake sale. Live entertainment will be provided by: Lone Prairie and The Batten Family Band. Children will enjoy the rides and inflatable games...and the parade is expected to be, as always, a BIG hit...this year featuring floats starting at 10:30 a.m. Adults will especially enjoy the silent auction benefiting the Home. One of the highlights of the day will be the auctioning of several home-made pies, made with delicious 'children's home' pecans. BBQ Lunch will be available for $10 for adults and $5 for children. September 14….Shallowater 1st Annual Cotton Fest - Shallowater Elementary PTO will be hosting Cotton Fest and all are invited to come help support our school. September 14 - 15….Buffalo Springs Lake Hot Air Balloon Round Up - Balloons start to launch at Sunrise (weather permitting) Approx. 7:30 a.m. – 8 a.m. Adult entry (12yrs and up) $6.00 for both days. Will receive wrist band to come both days. Kids 11 and under are FREE. Tethered rides will be available for FREE Saturday in the morning! Balloons will be launched on the golf course. Buffalo Springs Lake, 9999 High Meadow Road; 7 a.m.- 11:45 a.m. on the west end of the lake.

September 14 - 15….18th Annual Apple Butter Festival
– The annual Apple Butter Festival is fun for the entire family! Fun activities include hayrides through the orchard, live music, space slide, craft booths, petting zoo for the kids, meet Johnny Appleseed, face painting, release of lady bugs in the orchard, green chili roasting, a rock climbing wall in the trees, and lots of pre-picked apples, a BBQ lunch, apple turnovers and ice cream.
