August 15….2nd Veteran Volunteer Brunch Briefing
Everyone is invited to an open discussion on sharing information about veterans' unique needs and how the community can help. Odyssey is participating with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in the "We Honor Veterans Program" and is looking for more veterans who would like to volunteer to visit veteran hospice patients in their private homes, group homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Non-Veterans are also welcome to apply and offer socialization to the patient and/or short-term relief to the family member caring for the patient. Please note the additional speaker, Mike Travis of the South Plains Honor Flight, Thursday August 15th at the Veterans Brunch Briefing. It will begin at 10:30 am and end at 11:45 am. Come out and enjoy this free, patriotic presentation which highlights veterans and their families’ needs. Learn how folks are assisting these very deserving members of our community in big and small ways and truly making a difference. Refreshments will be provided. August 15….Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase Concert
The Center is an exciting and beautiful facility located in the heart of Lubbock’s historic Depot District. Home to the most extensive permanent exhibition on the life and music of Buddy Holly, the Center also features a contemporary Fine Arts Gallery, the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame Gallery and the outdoor Buddy & Maria Elena Holly Plaza. At 5:30 p.m. the Summer Showcase Concert Series will feature longtime Lubbock favorite John Sprott (Rock 'n' Roll). Buddy Holly Center, 1801 Crickets Avenue; 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

Sidecar Theatre presents: “Hairspray” - The 1950s are out and change is in the air! HAIRSPRAY, winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, an deliriously tuneful songs. It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her 'do! The Sidecar Theatre Co. will present the hit Broadway musical comedy “Hairspray,” inspired by the 1988 movie written and directed by John Waters. Music is by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman; book is by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The director of the Lubbock production is Joshua A. It’s movie night at Maxey Park again! This month’s event will be sponsored by Mi Casita Nursing and Rehabilitation. August 16….An Evening With The King - Donny Edwards is an international, multi-award winning Elvis tribute artist. He is a versatile performer with the ability to re-enact each era of Elvis’ life and career. Then you’ll revisit the legendary Vegas years of the 1970s as Donny recreates the performances that made Elvis the one and only “King of Rock n’ Roll”. August 16 - 17 (Repeats Aug. 23–24)….Lubbock Moonlight Musicals Presents “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” - The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. All summer performances will be outdoors in the Wells Fargo Amphitheater in beautiful Mackenzie Park. The audience is encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and personal lawn chairs or blankets. August 16 - 17 (Repeats Aug. 23-24)….The Reduced Shakespeare Company of Lubbock and CATS Theater present: "The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) - Enjoy a rollicking comedy by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield. In only ninety minutes a small group of actors present all of Shakespeare’s 30+ plays and portray a cast of thousands! But… this isn't the Shakespeare you remember from your high school English class. Tragedies are re-imagined as cooking shows and raps, and histories are as exciting as your favorite sports! This feat of imagination and slapstick comedy is a treat for the entire family. And please… feel free to throw some popcorn at Claudius, the tyrannical king everyone loves to hate. August 17….Community Block Party
- The Ted Phea Boys & Girls Club will host a Community Block Party for the neighborhood. Many businesses and organizations are helping to sponsor this Block Party. There will be hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, a bounce house, basketball games, KONA ice truck, kid games, and special $5.00 memberships to the Lubbock Boys & Girls Club will be available. August 17….Silent Wings Museum: Age of the Comics - Comic books were all the rage in the 1940s. On August 17, 2013 come to the Silent Wings Museum to learn how to draw superheroes in the classic comic book style. Participants will receive a history and an art lesson all in one! The class costs $7 per person and welcomes visitors ages 12 and older.

August 17.…Sounds of West Texas –The second of the summer concert series will feature local talent performing country, pop nostalgia, patriotic and gospel music. The evening of music will begin at 6:30 with and an acoustic set and at 7 p.m. the show with the house band will begin. This show will have a couple of patriotic spots, including a tribute to our military. Featured performers will be: Larry Allen, Susan Browning, Steve Burrus, Lesley Carraway, Dave Charlebois, Martin Duckett, Ray Espinoza, Richard Houston, Kaci Keltz, Jay Lemon, Donnetta Lippe, Boyd Martin, Bryan Martin, David Martin, Donnie Martin, Martin Country Band, Johnny Richardson, Betty Smith, Brent Smith, Keith Smith, Jon Smithers, Brian Tate, Tina Turner, Mark Wallney, Will Weathersby, Terry Westbrook, and Steve Williams...Emcee: Bobby Clark. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for college students with IDs, and $7 for children between 4-12. The price is $12 a piece for those who purchase tickets in groups of 10 or more. August 17 - 18….Lubbock Reptile and Exotic Animal Show - Repticon Lubbock marked Repticon's first show in West Texas in March 2013, and this new event filled the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lubbock with more reptiles, amphibians, and exotics than local area herpers could hope for in one place. Top vendors offered the best of the best in animals, and a bevy of supplies, caging, other merchandise, and the feeders needed by hungry herps! Repticon brought educational live animal seminars, and raffles with amazing prizes.

August 18….9th Annual K-9 SplashFest -
Calling all dogs! Clapp Pool will again be hosting the K-9 SplashFest. . Sponsored by Parks and Recreation, this popular event allows people and their dogs to swim
together in Clapp Pool. Dogs can compete in three different contests: Swim Suit Competition, Diving and Retrieving contests. Prizes will be awarded in each event. Door prizes and concessions will be available. Dogs must be up-to-date on their rabies vaccination and have with them a 2013 rabies tag or certificate from a veterinarian. Dogs must be on leash, and aggressive dogs or dogs in heat are not allowed. Admission fees for participants are $2.50 for adults and $2 for youth 17 or younger. Dogs get in free!
