May 3….TTU Annual Spring Plant Sale and Floral Design Show -
The TTU Horticultural Greenhouse is happy to host the annual spring plant sale plus the annual floral design show, benefitting the Margaret Coil Endowment for Floral Design. This Friday the TTU Horticultural Greenhouse will hold a plant sale for our Friends of the Gardens. TTU faculty, staff, students and friends are welcome to come by and shop from the plants that have been selected especially for this sale! Various houseplants, water-wise garden plants, vegetables and herbs will be available to purchase at great prices for any budget. Sales benefit the TTU classes held in the greenhouse, so come out and show your support for the students! Cash or checks only, please. Help support TTU's floral design students by attending their end of semester show! This year the students were asked to create a floral design representing their idea of beauty. Needless to say, the designs will be lovely! A donation of only $20 (plus tax) will allow you to select the design of your choice to take home. This is an amazing value for a quality floral design, and we hope that you will support the students by coming by and selecting an arrangement. The Plant Sale and Floral Design Show will be held inside the TTU Horticultural Greenhouse, located at the corner of Hartford Ave and Main Street. Located just north of United Spirit Arena. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (No early birds please.)

May 3….Lubbock Women's Club Distinguished Speaker Series Presents Ambassador Karen Hughes - The Lubbock Women’s Club Historical Foundation and The Ernestine Payne Welborn Endowment Community Speaker Series will host Ambassador Karen Hughes as a speaker this week for the annual speaker series. Hughes currently serves as the worldwide vice chair for Burson-Marsteller, where she counsels corporate, nonprofit and political leaders and provides strategic communications, corporate positioning and messaging advice. She previously served as undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs. She also is a past executive director of the Republican Party of Texas and a former television news reporter for the NBC affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth. Hughes also served as Counselor to President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2002. She wrote a memoir of her experiences working with President Bush in 2001-02 titled “Ten Minutes from Normal.” Tickets are $45 per person and available to the public as a community education project of The Lubbock Women’s Club. May 3….First Friday Art Trail - See the regular art venues...plus the exciting monthly additions showcasing art and artists downtown and throughout Lubbock. Catch a trolley or bus at many of the locations or pick up a FFAT map at any of the venues to see the art that can be found throughout the community each month during the event. First Friday Art Trail trolleys run continuously in downtown Lubbock during FFAT hours. Trolleys are free and you will find a "trolleyteer" on each trolley who is a treasure trove of info about FFAT and the arts in Lubbock and will help you navigate with ease. The trail runs throughout downtown and the Depot District from 6-9 p.m. This Friday at 5:30 you are invited to a special reception to celebrate the completion of the Helen DeVitt Jones Clay Studio! This state-of-the-art clay studio is by far the best public studio within a thousand mile radius. ….CATS Theatre: "Those Unforgettable Black Rims" - Winner of the 2012 Cordell Green Festival, held once every two years and is a local play writing festival, in which 6 plays were submitted. Kyle Bullock's play was selected to be a part of the 2013 Children and Adults Theatrical Studio season by a panel of judges. This play spans multiple generations of the Archer family and over 80 years. Featuring two, interwoven story lines set in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, the play follows the beautiful life and death of Virginia Archer. As her family picks up the pieces after her death, Virginia’s story is told in flashbacks and reveals how the love of her life changed everything. This comedy is a family-friendly play that is sure to keep audiences smiling! Director Robyn Huizinga describes the show as “one about family, not just a particular family from Eastern New Mexico, but a universal family that loves, learns, lives, and deals with death just like any family must. My goal and hope is that each member of the audience will see something of their own family represented in this humorous and moving piece of theater.” There will also be opportunities for Q&A with the cast, director, and playwright...and a chance for audience members to share their favorite thoughts and memories about their own families. May 3-4….Lubbock Symphony Orchestra Masterworks 5 -
The LSO will close the 2012-2013 season with an evening entirely devoted to the works of one of the most iconic composers of the Romantic era, Gustav Mahler. Join the LSO as the stage explodes with the force of Mahler’s one-of-a-kind and remarkable musical craftsmanship. The season finale performance will include Mahler’s instrumental and vocal masterpiece, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, sung by Quinn Patrick, mezzo soprano. May 3-4....Tango Opera "Maria di Buenos Aires" by Astor Piazzolla - This opera pulses to the passion and beat of Piazzolla's revolutionary nuevo tango and Horacio Ferrer's mesmerizing, imaginative poetry. María embodies everything that is the Argentinian people. Totally consumed by passion yet fiercely maintaining her independence, María fights for survival and freedom, never surrendering. "I dream a dream that nobody ever dreamed. María noche, María pasión fatal! María del amor!" Sung in Spanish with English supertitles. Presented by the TTU Tango Camarata with choreography by Ann Marie White; featuring Ann Marie White as Maria, Esteban Castillo as the Cantor, Riccardo Schmidt as the Duende; Directed by Dr. Thomas M. May 3-4….Flatlands Dance Theatre Presents Shakespeare’d: An Evening of Dance Sonnets - Flatlands Dance Theatre has created an evocative, passionate concert inspired by Shakespearean love sonnets. Missouri-based guest artist Tricia Zweier, local artist Valerie Komkov Hill, and local dramaturg Karen Wurl have joined the company in the production of contemporary, dance/theatre interpretations of the beloved sonnets. May 4….2013 Lubbock Great Strides Walk – This walk benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will take place this year at Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. There will be door prizes, food and fun! May 4….3rd Annual Kentucky Derby Gallop - Derby enthusiasts, hat lovers, mint julep sippers, and horse bidders are all invited to view this year’s Kentucky Derby, on the Big Screen, in Ransom Canyon. With your reservation or door entrance fee of $25 per person, (includes Mint Juleps, Mimosas, Wine, Beer, and Derby Food), the guests will be off to the races in their special Derby day hats, cowboy hats welcome, as the horses take their positions. Ranch House doors will open at 3 p.m. To the public, activities will continue after the Derby Race, and conclude at 6 p.m. To set the mood for all attending this historic horse-racing event, guests are encouraged to “dress for the occasion” and compete for special prizes. This year’s categories include: Ladies Best Hat, Gentleman’s Best Derby, Best Individual Ensemble, and Best Couple’s Ensemble, while Master of Ceremonies Joe Novak will award prizes to the winners and generate the race excitement for this 3rd Annual Kentucky Derby Gallop. Picking the “winning horses” is a big part of the day and a drawing will be held from those who pick the winners. Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Silent auction items, including items for horse or horse-racing enthusiasts, plus local artists’ designs will be available for your viewing, purchase or bidding pleasure. One of the highlights at this year’s Gallop will be the “Raffling of an Apple iPad.” Ticket purchasers do not have to be present to win and raffle tickets can be purchased at $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 by calling Jackie 806- 543-7089 or Joy 806-829-2765 for details. Watercolor Exhibition Debuts on Friday at the Buddy Holly Center


May 3 – June 9….West Texas Watercolor Society Spring Exhibition - The Buddy Holly Center is pleased to be hosting the annual spring exhibition of the West Texas Watercolor Society. The exhibition will be on display May 3, 2013 through June 9, 2013. Initially organized in 1962 and formally chartered by the State of Texas in 1973, the Society was instituted for the purpose of promoting the highest aesthetic standards in the art of watercolor painting. Artists from across the region will present their creations in a wide range of watercolor styles and methods.
