Some Other Very Special Events Happening This Upcoming Week:

June 5….Transit of Venus - On the evening of June 5, 2012, we have the opportunity to view a rare astronomical event – the disk of Venus transitioning across the Sun’s surface. Thanks to the geometry of the Earth’s and Venus’ orbits around the Sun, we see a pair of transits of Venus eight years apart, separated by more than a century. Since the 2012 transit is the 2nd of the pair, we will not see another transit in our lifetimes. A transit of Venus occurs when Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth. Since Venus is much smaller than the Sun, the transit looks like a black dot on the surface of the Sun. The South Plains Astronomy Club and the TTU Museum will sponsor a viewing event in the front of the TTU Museum at 4th and Indiana in Lubbock, TX. From 5 p.m. to sunset. We will provide safe viewing of the transit, information about the transit, Sun, and Venus. If Lubbock’s skies are cloudy, we will stream the event from other locations. For more information visit “Transit of Venus.org”

June 6….68th D-Day Anniversary Event - The Silent Wings Museum honors the great sacrifices given by the Allied forces on D-Day and commemorates our country’s veterans on Veterans Day. All visitors are welcomed with free admission to the museum and scheduled activities. Come see and explore this amazing facility and pay tribute to the heroes that made it happen. Silent Wings Museum, 6202 N. I-27; 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
