July 7….Wildlife Program for Children at the Library - The South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center staff will be at the Lubbock Public Library with some of their animal ambassadors. Pick up your free tickets at the library on the day of the program. Space is limited. Groves Library, 5520 19th Street; 1 and 2 p.m. For more information, please call the Mahon Library at 775-2838.

July 7….Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase - This week's featured act is The Prairie Scholarsperforming West Texas style rock 'n' roll. Performances are every Thursday evening from June 1 – September 1, 2011. The Summer Showcase experience is an entertaining and innovative environment, where patrons can enjoy original and unique Texas made music. Summer Showcase 2011 is free. There will be a cash bar and beverages available for purchase. No outside food, beverages or coolers allowed. Buddy Holly Center Meadows Courtyard, 1801 Crickets Ave; 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

July 7….Lubbock Fun Club Singles "SOS" Monthly Dinner -
Come and enjoy friends and food at El Chico restaurant. No reservations required. Come prepared to have a great time and share a good meal together! El Chico, 4119 Marsha Sharp Freeway; 6:30 p.m.

July 8, 9 (repeats July 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30)…. Lubbock Moonlight Musicals: “Disney’s High School Musical" - Based on a Disney Channel original movie written by Peter Barsocchini, "Disney’s High School Musical" will include a cast of more than 30 local high school and college students. The leading roles of Troy Bolton and Gabriela Montez will be played by Joshua Walters of Lubbock High School and Kathleen Langford, a music major at Texas Tech. All summer performances will be outdoors in the Wells Fargo Amphitheater in beautiful MacKenzie Park. The audience is encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and personal lawn chairs or blankets. Seating is on grassy terraces. Tickets are priced at $28 for center terrace, preferred seating and $20 for general admission. Prices include a service charge. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at www.ticketsage.com/_lubbock/ or by calling 806-770-2000. Substantial group discounts are available, as well as special prices for students and children. Wells Fargo Amphitheater, Mackenzie Park, 413 E. Broadway. Gates open at 7 p.m. and shows begin promptly at 8 p.m.

July 9….Downtown Art MarketSummertime in Lubbock...what better way to get out and about than to come down to the market? This outdoor event features over 30 local artists and growers all showcasing their work. Booths will be set up in the Gallery, the Artlab next door, the Gallery garden and along the sidewalks on Buddy Holly. Paintings, leather work, metal work, crafts, produce and other unique gift items will be for sale. Come downtown and see what all the talk is about, meet your friends and celebrate this cultural district event! More local artists are encouraged to show their work in a booth. July 9….50th Annual Early Settler's Day in Levelland - Levelland has hosted a festival titled Early Settlers Day for the past 49 years. This year will be the 50th year! In 2010 over 130 vendors lined the streets of downtown Levelland selling their goods. There is no charge to attend. Kicking off the day is an Early Settlers Day Parade. The parade travels around two sides of the courthouse square and contained over 135 entries in 2010. The estimated attendance for the event was over 6000. Local musicians play throughout the day from the gazebo located on the grounds of the courthouse. The event features a large children’s area with a rock wall, bounce houses, water slide, train ride, miniature horse rides and much more. Kids come to compete in the turtle race, turtle decorating contest and the stick horse race. Good eats galore can be found at Early Settlers Day with all types of food surrounding the square. Downtown Levelland, (on the square); 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

July 9….Lubbock Memorial Arboretum Second Saturday Program -
Join Dr. Cynthia McKenney for a breathtaking tour of Spanish gardens, as she explores the features, origins and applications of this style of gardening. Lubbock Memorial Arboretum, 4111 University (the little red brick house); Refreshments are served at 9:30 a.m. and program begins at 10 a.m.

(repeats July 23, 30, August 6)….Cactus Theater: Poker and Lace - Poker and Lace" written by Carla Ann Thompson and Brian Thompson, is based on the screenplay to the movie " A Big Hand for the Little Lady" which came out in the 1960s and starred Henry Fonda and Joanne Woodward. It's a comedy with music set in the Old West, with characters by the likes of Jack Daniels, Priscilla A. Plenty and Gray V. Digger. Several wealthy men hold an annual high stakes poker game and as fate would have it, a poor, naive farmer traveling through with his family,just happens to get a chance to sit in on a hand. The stakes are rather high but the hand is worth it. In addition to the fun, the audience will enjoy some great country songs made famous by the Bellamy Brothers, Jerry Reed, Kenny Rogers and others. "Poker and Lace" is directed by Jane Prince Jones, produced by Don Caldwell, and starring Kurt A. Kiser, Jeff Bailey, Brittany Hoffman, Marilyn Arland, Jere Lowe, Mark Martin, Rob Holton, Colton Kiser, Shawn Wilson, Todd Klein, Jay Hoes, Eddie McBride and Jane Prince Jones, with other actors to be announced soon. It promises to be an evening full of music and laughter for the entire family. Tickets are $17.50 and available by calling 762-3233. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave; 7:30 p.m.

SUNDAY

July 10….Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe "Sunday Party" - Classic cars, live music and cool treats and eats will be served during this "Sunday Party". Fun for the whole family, the festivities begin at 5 p.m. and extend into the early evening hours. Come enjoy cool cars, hot tunes and a good time for all. Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe, 3404-34th Street; 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

July 10 (also July 17)….Westwinds Brass Band's Sunday Concerts in the Park - Bring your picnics, lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the Westwinds Brass Band out under the stars at Wagner Park! Enjoy the evening and hear the nostalgic music while visiting with your neighbor....or meet a new one! A children's march is always included so come see what it's all about! Each performance is roughly one hour in length. No admission charge...just bring your lawn chairs and head for the park and enjoy a good old-fashioned band play wonderful nostalgic songs you're sure to enjoy. Wagner Park, 26th and Elgin Avenue; 8 p.m.

Free Child ID Kits Available in July


Lubbock United Neighborhood Assoc.(LUNA) will have Free Child ID Kits available shortly to those who wish to have them. There is a limited number so contact LUNA ASAP to reserve your Child ID Kits. The Child ID Kits include the following items for parents to collect information about their children and to keep in a safe place so that if the unthinkable were to happen, families could provide law enforcement personnel with the necessary information to help find/locate their child. The Child ID Kits come in a regular size letter envelope and contain the following items:

1. A card that you can place your child’s fingerprints on, their vital information such as name, social security #, date and place of birth, physical description information and photo of child

2. Also Inkless applicator for providing fingerprints

3. And 2 sterile cotton tipped swabs for DNA that can be kept
