May 29….Lawrence Welk Show Favorites performed by “The Otwell Twins” - These Tulia, Texas natives have delighted audiences throughout America since starting their career as part of the cast of the Lawrence Welk Show in 1977. From country to jazz, to patriotic their music will melt your heart and assure you of one of the most moving and inspirational nights imaginable. Join Roger and David Otwell as they honor the Americans who have paid the supreme price for our freedom this Memorial Day weekend! Tickets: $25. Cactus Theater,1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

MONDAY - Memorial Day

May 31….8th Annual Memorial Day Service - The public is invited to attend the Eight Annual Memorial Day Service, hosted by the Nancy Anderson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Post 575, and the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Major General Walter Huffman, United States Army (Retired) will be the featured speaker and City Council member Floyd Price will give the Invocation at this year’s patriotic event. Approximately one thousand small American flags, provided by American Legion Post 575, will be placed for the day on one thousand gravesites that have a Veterans Administration Memorial headstone or footstone. Those who have a loved one who is a veteran and who is buried at the City of Lubbock Cemetery are encouraged to attend the service and are welcome to place an American flag at their loved one's gravesite. It is estimated that there are more than 3,000 veterans buried at City of Lubbock Cemetery. Seating is limited, and the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the ceremony. The City of Lubbock Cemetery is located at 2011 East 31st Street (two blocks east of Martin Luther King Boulevard and East 31st Street); 10 a.m.

May 31….Dedication Ceremony for Veterans' Headstones -
Local veterans as well as City and County employees have undertaken an effort to request and set VA headstones at the unmarked graves of those U.S. veterans who were interred by Lubbock County and for whom no immediate family can be located. So far 32 monuments have been set, and City Cemetery and Lubbock County records indicate there are 152 U.S. veterans interred by Lubbock County at the City of Lubbock Cemetery who do not have a headstone, who have no immediate family that can be located, and who qualify to receive a VA marker. The event will take place in the area across from the cemetery business office - - south of the East 31st Street entrance, and the public and media are invited to attend; The City of Lubbock Cemetery is located at 2011 East 31st Street (two blocks east of Martin Luther King Boulevard and East 31st Street); 3 p.m.

une 1….“Registration Meeting for National Night Out” – Lubbock United Neighborhood Association (LUNA) and Lubbock Police Department’s Neighborhood Services Unit will host a registration meeting for National Night Out. Registration for this year’s National Night Out event will provide a unique opportunity for anyone who is planning to host a National Night Out event, whether large or small to register National Night Out event and request City officials to attend or speak at their event. Participants may register their event and request City officials such as the Mayor and City Council members, Lubbock Police Chief, Lubbock Police officers, Lubbock Firemen and others to attend and speak at their National Night Out event in August. Participants will be required to complete a registration form and this will be the only chance to request City officials to attend their National Night Out event. Registration forms, contact names, phone numbers and additional information will be given to each individual or group hosting a National Night Out event. Participants are asked to provide specific details regarding their National Night Out event during registration to help expedite the registration process. Celebrating its 27th year, National Night Out was created to get citizens involved in “Giving Crime and Drugs A Going Away Party.” National Night Out was designed to: 1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) generate support for, and participation in local anticrime programs; 3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and 4) send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Get involved and become aware of things going on in your neighborhood and be a part of the solution in fighting crime. Getting to know your neighbors is a step in the right direction in helping to fight crime. Crime knows no boundaries. Take this first step in fighting crime in your neighborhood and attend the registration meeting. Garden Room at St. John’s United Methodist Church located at 1500 University Avenue; 7 p.m.
