April 29-May 2….“Curtains” – Texas Tech Dept. of Theatre and Dance presents another great production in the 2009-2010 season. Curtains is a musical send-up of backstage murder mystery plots and reveals the fallout when the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. Tickets are $12 for individuals; $5 for students with a valid ID. Charles E. Maedgen, Jr. Theatre, (east entrance), located on 18th Street between Boston and Flint Avenues; 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday.

April 30….2010 Season of Soup’s On Troupe - In Lubbock, senior citizens are stepping forward as both performers and audiences to provide new live theater opportunities. The local group, Soup’s On Troupe—for members aged 50 and over—began in late 2009. Specializing in short plays and light entertainment chosen to appeal to senior tastes and sensibilities. The new playbill for 2010 offers "Old Flames" by D.K. Oklahoma and "I’m Herbert!" by Robert Anderson. Both are directed by Juanice Myers in a “reader’s theatre” format. Appearing in "Old Flames" are George Comiskey, Janet Duke, Bill Todd, Duane Christian, Roland Myers and Bunny Kennedy. In this comedy, “Ray” and “Angie” investigate rumors that his mother may not be “home alone,” with unexpected results from their snooping. "I’m Herbert!" features Bunny Kennedy and Darrell Vines as two elderly people sitting on a porch talking. Each has had one or more previous partners, so they don't always know which one the other one is. Soup’s On Troupe will present these short plays (plus an added surprise) as dinner/theater. April 30….“Night on the Wild Side”
– Come and enjoy this celebration benefitting South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc., a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education organization serving wildlife and Texas South Plains communities for 22 years. The event will include large silent auction featuring themed baskets and individual items (just in time for Mother’s Day and Graduation), fine McPherson wines, hors d’oeuvres and music by Mike Pritchard between 7 and 9 p.m. Please RSVP immediately by calling (806) 797-3251 (Bonnie Bart at Mason Warner, Co.) between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Some tickets will be available at the door, but please RSVP so arrangements can be made with the caterer. $25.00 donation per person, cash or checks only. South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. cares for more than 2500 wildlife orphans and casualties annually and is not funded by state or federal regulating agencies. April 30-May 1….Lubbock Symphony Orchestra: "Rêveries et Passions" - This will be an exciting season finale in the LSO 2009-2010 season. Berlioz’ revolutionary imagination is showcased in his Symphonie Fantastique. The first movement is appropriately named “Rêveries, passions” (dreams, passions), a story of love, death and magic. Rachmaninoff’s infamously difficult Piano Concerto No. 3 overflows with unbridled passion. Guest artist Ronan Magill is sure to capture the power, passion and perfection of this monstrous work. April 30, May 1, 2 (repeats April 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16)….“No Sex Please, We’re British” - A young bride who lives above a bank with her husband who is the assistant manager, innocently sends a mail order off for some Scandinavian glassware. What comes is Scandinavian pornography. The plot revolves around what is to be done with the veritable floods of pornography, photographs, books, films and eventually girls that threaten to engulf this happy couple. The matter is considerably complicated by the man's mother, his boss, a visiting bank inspector, a police superintendent and a muddled friend who does everything wrong in his reluctant efforts to set everything right, all of which works up to a hilarious ending of closed or slamming doors. This farce ran in London over eight years and also delighted Broadway audiences. Written by Alistair Foot and Anthony Marriott and directed by John A. Packard. Rating Comedy PG 13. May 1….Mayfest Celebration - The Lubbock Community Theatre is sponsoring a family-friendly event with carnival games for children and arts and crafts for adults. May 1….Kids' Fun Fair 2010 - On Saturday, May 1st, local businesses and organizations offering classes, events, camps, and summertime activities of every type will gather for a family-oriented event
dubbed “Kids’ Fun Fair 2010.” A joint-venture of the Lubbock Fun Club and Home and Family Magazine, the event will feature community vendors, entertainers, demonstrations and kids activities throughout the day. The two organizations hosted separate similar events prior to this year but have combined their efforts to bring a bigger, better event for the community. Starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st, the event will offer parents the opportunity to gather information, visit with vendors offering programs and services ranging from educational to medical to recreational…and everything in-between. Vendors offering summer activities will make early sign-ups available and be able to answer questions regarding their respective offerings while children will enjoy meeting instructors, educators, camp directors, artisans...as well as interacting in a festival-type atmosphere. Animal demonstrations, musicians, local area mascots, entertainers and many other attractions including activities indoors and outdoors will be featured. Special surprises including local hero Raider Red and the zany Professor Panteloney await attendees during this FREE event....open to the public and designed for the whole family. Additionally, those attending the free festivities in the atrium and meeting room will also be able to save $1 admission - or $2 if buying a combo ticket which includes a theater ticket - at the Science Spectrum and Omni theater during the Kids' Fun Fair event (see coupon in the ad on the right). Also....the amazing LEGO exhibit "The Art of the Brick" is also a held-over special exhibit being offered in the museum itself so you don't want to miss that if you haven't seen it or want to simply see it again! May 1....Dino Day 2010 - This year's theme is "The Case of the Missing Dinosaurs!" Admission and parking is free. Drop-in fun, free event for kids 6-10 and their families includes: "Dig for Fossils"; PBS film series Walking with Dinosaurs; and a talk with a real life dinosaur hunter. Drawings to win 1 of 50 free Paleontology Field Kits (every 30 minutes; begins 1:30 p.m.). South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will present living raptors up close. Planetarium shows - "The Case of the Missing Dinosaurs" shown at 11:30 a.m.and 3:30 p.m. "laser RETRO" will be offered at 2 p.m. All shows are free and there will be Dino-mite refreshments! May 1….3rd Annual Night to Laugh Out Loud - The Young Leaders of the Lubbock Area Foundation announce the 3rd Annual Night to Laugh Out Loud with a new twist! This year the show will feature Vocal Trash...a "trash can band" from Dallas! If you have ever attended a concert like this, you know how much fun they are! Think of all your favorite songs - past and present - played with all-recycled materials! Proceeds from the event address children’s issues in the community. Food and drink provided by Melt Restaurant and Bar. Reservations $40.00 each ($70.00 for 2) and include food, 2 adult beverages/person and entertainment. LHUCA Firehouse Theater, 511 Ave. K; 7 p.m.

May 1….Cactus Kids Go To The Grammys - If you have always wanted to attend the Grammy Awards but haven't had the privilege, here's your chance! The Cactus Kids, students of Terri Caldwell Music, will showcase Grammy Award winning songs. You owe it to yourself to attend this spectacular show! From limos to paparazzi to tuxes and tiaras this beautiful concert will be a delight in sight and sound! Featuring the Cactus Kids, Cactus Cuties, Lil' Sis, the Cactus Itty Bittys and special soloists, accompanied by the fabulous Lubbock Texas Rhythm Machine! To make this performance even more glamorous, for the first time ever the instructors from Terri Caldwell Music, Terri Caldwell, Cami Caldwell, Julie Arriaga and Sheena Fadeyi, will be featured in this exciting concert.
