THURSDAY and SUNDAY

January 21, 24….Winter Dinner Theatre - Texas Tech Music Theatre presents Jason Robert Brown's contemporary pop-musical “Songs for a New World”. Says the author of this gripping revue, "it's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back." The cast of 8 includes undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students Candice Lane Aipperspach, Esteban Castillo, Jonathan Fruge, Margaret Manago, Ann Marie Nichols, Christian Schmoker, Andy Smith, and Lindsay Swartwood. Stage Director Christopher Bailey exclaims, "Brown only dreamt of a cast this sensitive and consummate in their artistry. The music is energetic with strong rhythms and stirring melodies. Each character confronts changes with pure fervor and reverent audacity and they can sing too, really well." The show also features a dynamic band lead by Deborah Gelber (music director) and features two keyboards, a percussionist, and a drummer. FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY

J
anuary 22, 23, 24 (repeats Jan. 29-31; Feb 5-7)….“Bus Stop” - In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she's ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, "Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I'm gonna end up in Montana..." As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance. Written by William Inge and Directed by Jay C. Brown. Rating: Drama PG 13. Lubbock Community Theatre (formerly Boston Avenue Playhouse), 4232 Boston Avenue; Fridays and Saturdays 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.
SATURDAY

January 23….Rain Barrel Workshop - The Lubbock Memorial Arboretum is proud to be involved in Lubbock’s “green” movement. In a partnership with the City of Lubbock and Hodges Community Center, they are excited to bring the Rain Barrel Workshops to the Lubbock community. Rain barrels are a great way to conserve water for irrigating your home garden and to reduce storm water runoff. Lubbock receives about 18 inches of rainfall each year. You can collect rainwater from rooftops in mosquito-proof containers. This water can be used later on lawn or garden areas, saving you money during the long hot summer months. Even if you do not have a gutter system currently on your home, rain barrels can be strategically placed to function effectively. Learn how to prepare and decorate the rain barrel, how to put it in the best location for ease of use, and how to mosquito-proof it. Reserve your space now and take an active part in water conservation efforts in your own neighborhood! The cost of each workshop is $50 and includes all the materials required to create a rain barrel. Let your imagination run free with a paintbrush in your hand. For more information visit http://www.lubbockarboretum.org. Hodges Community Center, Clapp Park – 40th and University; 12 p.m.- 3 p.m.
