THURSDAY through SUNDAY

November 19– 22….Holiday Happening 2009 - The holiday season on the South Plains will begin as the Junior League presents Holiday Happening 2009 – Celebrate… 30 Years of Giving! This will be a fabulous event combining some of the old Holiday Happening traditions with new twists that will create a wonderful new experience for attendees. Holiday Happening opens and kicks off with Sneak Peek - Celebrate…Christmas in the City. Sneak Peak will include “Celebrate Surprises” mystery box raffle from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18. This event will give shoppers a chance to see more than 140 participating merchants. Sneak Peak will also include a special shopping time for sustaining members of the Junior League from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a stroller-free shopping time from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres catered by At Your Service. On Thursday, November 19, the Ladies’ Day Event is “Celebrate… All that Glitters,” with a style show through the decades from Malouf’s. There are still tickets available for the champagne brunch, but the lunch has sold out. Tickets to the ladies’ day event are $40 each. A silent auction is open from 9:30am – 1:30pm, or you can just come with friends and enjoy market hall shopping from 11:30am-7pm with stroller free shopping being from 11:30am-2pm. Friday, November 20, is Celebrate…A Cool Yule. This night time event is located at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This event will feature entertainment by the Funk Puppets and a silent auction of items filled with things men will love like hunting and ski trips. Hors d’oeuvres will be catered by Melt Restaurant & Lounge. Breakfast with Santa is a timeless tradition of Holiday Happening on Saturday. Santa will read a very special Christmas story to the children, while they enjoy breakfast provided by Chick-fil-A. Entertainment will also be provided by the Itty Bitties. There are still tickets available for two of the three seatings – 8:30a.m. and 11:30a.m. Market Hall shopping will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday is the last chance to shop the merchant booths in Market Hall from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. and to purchase Holiday Happening decorations. Holiday Happening is an annual fund-raiser of the Junior League of Lubbock. Since it was founded in 1979, Holiday Happening has raised more than $4.5 million for the Lubbock Community. Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to support the Food 2 Kids program and Kid’s in the Kitchen. The Food 2 Kids program provides almost 900 weekend food sacks to children in the Lubbock Independent School District who would otherwise go hungry during the weekend, and Kids in the Kitchen is an initiative that empowers children to make healthy eating and lifestyle choices. November 20….Maxey Center Kid’s Night Out Kids, ages 6 – 12 are invited to enjoy a night of pizza, Wii and Guitar Hero, hide-and-go-seek, Thanksgiving arts and crafts, sugar cookies and movies. November 20….Singles (30s-40s) Ice Cream Get-Together – Come and join this new group of singles for a fun time of getting to know each other and planning future events. No RSVP needed…just come on by and enjoy a delicious treat. 10% discount for 10 or more so come join the fun and meet some new friendly faces! Event takes place at The Ice Cream Shoppe, 2705 26th Street; 7 p.m.

November 20-21….“Annie Jr.” - Hub Performing Arts School presents the beloved musical. You will love this cast of all kids! Bring the family and enjoy an evening of entertainment sure to get you ready for the upcoming holidays! Tickets are reserved seating- $10 adults and $5 children. Tickets may be purchased by calling 795-7344 and will be sold at the door an hour before each show. OL Slaton Middle School, 32nd & Ave Q; Friday: 7 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. (Note the revised evening time for the last Saturday performance due to the time change for the Tech football game.)

20-21; (repeats Nov. 27–28)….”Smoke on the Mountain” The highly-touted Cactus production of “Smoke on the Mountain” will return for two weekends. Set in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church during their Saturday Night Sing, the Sanders will keep you laughing from start to finish and your toes a tappin’. Featuring Jane Prince Jones, Mike Morgan, Donnie Allison, Cami Caldwell, Toby Caldwell, Tarah Read, Allan Wallace, Marilyn Arland, Mark Paden, and more. Don’t miss the sequel in December, “The Sander’s Family Christmas.” Tickets are $25. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY

November 21….Stocking Stuffing Volunteer Opportunity - The Lubbock Stockings Patriots are stuffing 3300 stockings for Kunsan AB. Stuffing the stockings is a lot of fun, enjoyed by little children and WWII veterans alike. Some of the stockings are works of art: some made by students and others by retired members of the community. Donations have come from as far away as Houston and Hobbs, as well as towns inside and outside Lubbock County. Items being sent in the stockings include candy, toiletries, business promotional items, cards with handwritten messages of encouragement, and CDs or cassette tapes. November 21….Big XII College Football: Texas Tech vs Oklahoma - The Sooners arrive for the home finale of the season at Jones AT&T Stadium. Note the special time change to 11:30 a.m. to accomodate a regional TV broadcast.

November 21….Music and Sounds of West Texas - West Texas music and vocal artists will share their talent for a fun filled evening of entertainment for the entire family. Donations appreciated. Call 767-3724 for more information. Garden & Arts Center, 4215 University Avenue; 6 p.m.

November 21…. Lubbock Area Square and Round Dance Federation Dance – Come out and enjoy a fun night of country and social dancing. This dance will include some square dancing demonstrations as well as the choreographed ballroom (round dance). Donations accepted at the door benefitting Children’s Miracle Network.
