May 7….2009 Go Red For Women Event - Did you know heart disease is the number one killer of women? You can learn how to fight this disease and live a healthier life at this event and luncheon hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA). The event features complimentary health screenings, vendor exhibits and physician-led discussions from 10 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. The luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sally Baskey will be the luncheon guest speaker. Her program, “Laughter, My Drug of Choice,” begins at noon. The money raised from the luncheon goes to support awareness, education and research of heart disease in women. Tickets are $25 each and sponsorships are available. If you’re interested in taking part in Go Red activities or attending the Go Red Event and luncheon, please call the American Heart Association at (806) 748-2500. May 7....Lubbock Fun Club (SOS) May Mixer (SPECIAL EVENT) -
Singles from Lubbock and South Plains area ages 40 and over will have an opportunity to get acquainted and meet other singles at the "May Mixer" hosted by the Lubbock Fun Club singles group.

May 8-9; (also May 15-17)….The Garza Theatre’s production of “The Seafarer” - The West Texas premiere of a new, multiple Tony Award-nominated play by Irish playwright Conor McPherson. The theater has teamed up with the Hotel Garza to celebrate in real Irish style with dinner and staycation package deals. James "Sharky" Harkin, an alcoholic Irishman with a checkered past, has returned home for Christmas to care for his recently blinded brother, Richard. As Sharky attempts sobriety, he contends with the hard-drinking, irascible Richard and his own conscience. Sharky's past comes back to haunt him when the Devil comes back for his due in a game of crooked poker. In the meantime, Irish humor and storytelling abound in this tragic comedy about good, evil and human imperfection. The cast includes Justin Duncan, veterans Mitchell Britton and Josh Peterson, C.D. Adamson, and Bill Gelber, renowned Texas Tech theater professor. Hotel Garza is offering patrons a hearty Irish meal prior to the theatre experience. Event runs throughout the day.

May 9….Mommy & Me Tea -
Mothers, come and enjoy a special morning with your little girl. Together you will enjoy decadent tea, delightful treats, bonding activities, and priceless photographs. This is perfect for some much needed “girls time.” Ages 2-8, $10/child. Hodges Community Center, 4011 University; 11 a.m.- noon.

May 9….Downtown Art Market - The second Saturday of each month throughout the summer, Tornado Gallery will host the Downtown Art Market, a street sale of handmade, one of a kind creations and wares from 20+ vendors. May 9….Hub Performing Arts School “A Night of Broadway” - A special fundraising event featuring special guest star- Michael Papajohn. This summer he will be in several blockbusters including: Terminator, Transformers, Land of the Lost and G-Force. The Advanced Performance Team from Hub Performing Arts School will also be performing and there will be a silent auction. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance by calling 795-7344. Proceeds will help raise money for scholarships and assistance for students. Michael Papajohn will be signing pictures on Saturday morning, May 9th, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. at Hub Performing Arts School, 3833 50th St. This event is $5 for each autographed picture. He will also be holding a workshop for actors in the afternoon at the school. Details on the workshops is available at www.hubperformingarts.com. "A Night of Broadway" takes place at Broadway Church of Christ, 1924 Broadway; 7 p.m.

May 9; (also May 22-23)….“Love of Life” with Kurt and Jane - Cactus favorites Kurt Kiser and Jane Prince-Jones blend their comic skills and give you a fun evening of sketches filled with hilarious confusion, out and out knee-slapping slapstick and tender comedy. If you've been fortunate enough to live a long life, you know what it's like to sometimes forget a person's name. The classic comedy shows how "I'm Herbert" hysterically funny this can be if the name you've forgotten is your own spouse! In "Carl's Doctor's Appointment" Jane and Kurt combine their comedic timing to give you two blue-collar characters you might meet at your own doctor's office. And in a cutting from "On Golden Pond", you'll see the versatility of both comedians who bring to the stage a touching piece from the award winning script. The second half of "Love of Life" is Jane Prince Jones's original one-act play entitled "Franks and Beans", set in a Smiley, Texas café where a crowd of characters is brought to life by Kurt and Jane. "Love of Life" offers an evening of family entertainment proudly showcasing Cactus Theater alum Kurt Kiser and Jane Prince Jones. Tickets $25.00. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue, 7:30 p.m.

May 9….West Texas Roller Dollz vs. Albuquerque’s Duke City Derby - The theme is "Derby Bots: More Than Meets the Eye” and they will be dressing up like transformers and showcasing some of the original cars from the movie. They promote a family friendly environment and love sharing their sport with all ages. 10% of all ticket sales will be donated to the Lubbock Boys and Girls Club.
