FRIDAY ONLY

August 15....1st Annual Vintage Township Kids' Talent Show - Lubbock youth are invited to "Come Strutt Your Stuff" at this first-time event. This family-friendly neighborhood will be hosting a free talent show for area youth. After the show a free movie will be showing in the park. Hamburgers and drinks will be available for purchase, so plan on staying for an entire evening of fun. Awards will be given for the top single contestant (or group) in each of two age groups in the five following categories: vocal/karaoke singing; dramatic monologue (acting out a scene from a favorite movie or book); dance routine; musical instrument; and miscellaneous (for the magicians and such). Each category will break contestants into two age groups: ages 9 and under, and ages 10-17. Registration and try-outs for the event will be held the night prior — Thursday, August 14 on the stage in Founder’s Park from 3 p.m to 8 p.m. All participants must attend the audition and are asked to limit their performance to three minutes. August 15....Home School Educators Beginning of the School Year Kick-Off Picnic -
The Lubbock Home School Association would like to invite all local home educators to this free annual event. We welcome and encourage ALL new and veteran home educators in the Lubbock and surrounding areas to attend. This event has proven to be one of the best ways to meet with members of our association and see what we have to offer you and your family; it is also an excellent opportunity to find out how you can be a part of furthering the home school experience for others on the South Plains. Wagner Park, 28th & Flint Ave.; 6 p.m.

August 15....Billy McClaran’s Tribute to Bob Wills and Hank Williams
- The spectacular Billy McClaran once again brings the top two legends in western swing and country music to life. This show received great reviews in May so this second performance has been added. Joining Billy once again for this concert is the talented Caitlann Wiley. Reserved seat tickets are $25 and $20; Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue, 7:30 p.m.

August 15-16.... Lubbock Moonlight Musicals Presents, "The Music Man" - Based on a story by Franklin Lacey, Professor Harold Hill likes a challenge and when the other salesmen on the train west tell him that Iowa is the biggest test of sales ability, he gets off at River City. Includes favorite songs: "Seventy Six Trombones", "Gary Indiana", and "Trouble in River City". The amphitheatre is an outdoor venue with paved paths, nighttime lighting and grassy terraces. Ticketholders are welcome to bring a picnic dinner and lawn chairs or a picnic blanket. A wheelchair ramp, concessions and restrooms are available on-site. Wells Fargo Amphitheatre (413 East Broadway) in Mackenzie Park, near the Broadway Avenue entrance to the South Plains Fairgrounds. Gates open at 7 p.m.; show begins at 8 p.m.

August 16….9th Annual John Deer Raffle -
“Planting the Seeds for Change.” All proceeds to benefit Women’s Protective Services. Ticket price includes admission for two adults, dinner for two by J&M BBQ, live entertainment by Penny Lawrence and the Country Mile Band, and silent auction. WPS is giving away 5 Gators. Gators are great for hunting, fishing, land maintenance, and much more. Tickets are $100 and may be purchased in advance by calling 806-748-5292 or by checking with the local Hurst Farm Supply. August 16th....Ranch Dance - The ranch hosts of the National Ranching Heritage Center invite you to experience the Ranch Dance tradition of the " Original West Texas Saturday Night" as they honor the memory of Texas cowboy and legendary fiddler Frankie McWhorter. Dance under the stars to age-old fiddle tunes and a little Western swing, performed live by fiddle band Texas Stardust, as we celebrate McWhorter's musical legacy and other contributions to our Western heritage. August 16....Jason Fellers’ Tribute to Chicago & Creedence Clearwater Revival - Jason is one of the most requested artists in the incredibly talented Cactus Theater lineup and to accommodate the wonderful patrons they are proud to have Jason back to present his marvelous tribute to the unforgettable music of Chicago and CCR. Cash bar. Note: This show is Shane's pick for 2008 "Local Show of the Year" so far...incredibly well-performed. Reserved seat tickets $25 and $20. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

August 17....K-9 Splash Fest -
Dogs love the water and people love their dogs so what better way to celebrate what your dogs mean to you then to give them their own Play Day at Clapp Park City Pool. There will be swimming, booths, and three-four dog contests. Each event will have a TOP. Cost: $2 for Adults Swimming, $1.50 for children under 18 swimming. Dogs get in free; Clapp Park City Pool, 46th and Avenue U - inside Clapp Park; 1 p.m.- 5 p.m.
