July 17....Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase Concert Series -
You're in for a good time when the Texas Bel Airs bring their rockabilly roadhouse music to the outdoor stage in the courtyard. FREE admission. Buddy Holly Center, 1801 Crickets Avenue. 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.


(Editor's note: After this show in the courtyard, the band will move around the block and also perform with Kent Mings and perhaps other special guests at LaDiosa Cellars, 901 17th St., from 8:30-11:00 p.m.)

July 17....Lesley Sawyer & Brian McRae at Tornado Alley - Concert performance outdoors in the space between Tornado Gallery and the Cactus Theater. Seating is limited...but you're welcome to bring your lawn chairs! BYOB policy in effect; $5 cover for these super-talented singers. 1822 Buddy Holly Avenue. Note: Start time was unannounced as this postcard was being produced...but we're guessing gates will open at 6 p.m. or slightly before. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for good music and anywhere near the Depot District.

July 18...."Canaan Bound" in Concert - This Branson, Missouri gospel group is making a Texas tour and will be performing one show only. Following this concert, the audience will also see "Paul the Apostle. Tickets remain at $20. July 18....Jason Fellers’ Tribute To The Eagles -
Jason performed an astounding Eagles Tribute in January to a packed house. Since then, we’ve had many requests to bring him and the Eagles music back to the Cactus. So here’s your chance to experience two hours of this incredible music. It doesn’t get any better than this one! Reserved tickets are $25 and $20; Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 7:30 p.m.

July 18-19.... Lubbock Moonlight Musicals Presents, "The Pirates of Penzance" - Frederic was meant to be an apprentice of a pilot but his maid mistakes her master's wish for a pirate and after many years he discovers the truth. With a special appearance by the police, the show is a rollicking masterpiece of comic mayhem. Tickets are available at the gate and at all Select-a-Seat outlets, by phone at 800-735-1288 or 806-770-2000 or on the web at www.selectaseatlubbock.com. The amphitheatre is an outdoor venue with paved paths, nighttime lighting and grassy terraces. July 18-19...."True West" - Hub Theatre Group is back with a great new production of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard's play, "True West". The play deals with sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer who clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Sal Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale. The play follows the devolving relationship between the brothers and the inevitable result of their dysfunctional past. July 18-19...."Last Tango in Pango Pango" - The 2008 Harley Sadler Show will be Last Tango in Pango Pango by Eddie Cope. The Garza has historically presented a raucous comedy in this season slot, and Last Tango will prove to be one of the best ever. Last Tango is a light-hearted spoof. A saga of the South Seas, it follows Krissy Kelly, a sweet but determined young woman searching for her father on the tiny island of Pango Pango. A brave cabin boy from a Kansas farm assists Krissy in her search for her father's missing fortune. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children; Garza Theater, Post, TX; 8 p.m.

July 19....The 4th Annual Fit4Fun Kids Triathlon - This event is for children ages 7-14. There are 2 age groups - 7 to 10 and 11-14 which determines the distances the children will do. Every child receives a goodie bag and t-shirt and all finishers receive a medal. Lots of fun for everyone. Entry fee is $15 per child and $10 for each additional child in a family. July 19....“No Limit” Back in Concert By Popular Demand - This fresh new West Texas bluegrass collaboration performed a remarkable show in May and is returning, by popular demand, to present more of their phenomenal music. From traditional to “new” bluegrass, folk and old-style country to gospel and original tunes of their own...this group of longtime friends is stretching themselves to "no limit." July 20.... "Gold City" - This concert experience is no stranger to sellout performances all over the country...even the world....and they are coming to Ragtown! July 20....New Talent Auditions...at the Cactus Theater - Calling all musicians and singers! We have received numerous phone calls over the last few months from people who want to become a part of the Cactus magic. We are happy and eager to see and hear the untapped talent of Lubbock and the surrounding areas. We will be holding open auditions from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Please bring your music accompaniment on CD or tape or an instrumental accompanist. A piano will be provided. Actors please prepare a monologue. Performers selected as finalists after the auditions will perform live on stage at the Cactus Theater in our New Talent Showcase Concert August 1st. Auditions will be on a first come/first serve basis so make sure you come out early. Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue; 1 p.m.

July 23....Kids Cookie Camp - Kris King welcomes all Lubbock Fun Club kids and parents each Wednesday this summer to make a special treat and decorate fun theme cookies at Cookies By Design. Reservations are required for one hour appointments, 1-4 p.m. Call 794-6992 to reserve a spot. Children must be accompanied by an adult and the cost is only $5.00 per child to decorate one theme cookie. Summer is sweeter at Cookies by Design, 3310 82nd Street.

July 26...."Laugh Out Loud" Improv Comedy Performance - Featuring Austin -based Merlin Works Players and benefiting the Lubbock Area Foundation's Young Leader's Endowment Fund. Proceeds from the event will address children's issues in the community. Tickets are $35 per person or $50 per couple.
