August 24….Buddy Holly Summer Showcase Series - This week, Sugarwitch plays Rockabilly/Surf Rock/Desertbilly. Summer Showcase 2017 is free to the public. There will be a cash bar, food and beverages available for purchase. Please, no outside beverages are allowed. Performances every Thursday from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm in the Meadows Courtyard, 1810 Crickets Ave.

August 24….Sock Hop at the Holly Hop – Come for a short lesson at 7 p.m….followed by a Dance to the Hits of the Fabulous ‘50s. Come dressed in your ‘50s attire. Acencio from Absolute Dance with be the deejay. Admission is free. And of course, there will be delicious Holly Hop treats to cool you down. Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe, 3404-34th Street; 7-10 p.m.

August 25….Cactus Theater Presents: Rock 'n' Roll Revival: A Nostalgic Night of the '50s & '60s Classic Hits
- Get ready to turn back the clock to the great CLASSIC HITS of the ORIGINAL ROCK 'N' ROLL ERA as the Cactus Theater pays tribute to some of the greatest all-time songs and singers. Featured Cactus favorites include an absolutely AMAZING lineup - including Jason Fellers, Jeff Bailey, Bethany Longoria, Amber Pennington, Baby Jade, Tiffany Nelson and Berklee Timmons! Just a small sampling of the songs you'll hear: "Rave On", "Shake Rattle and Roll", "Hound Dog", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Love the One You're With", "Sweet Nothin's", "At Last" and many more! You will love this show, folks. This rock 'n' roll concert will take place on Friday evening, August 25th at 7:30 - and those who purchase tickets to this concert will be eligible to receive a FREE ticket to either of the following night's screenings of the classic coming-of-age film "American Graffiti", on Saturday the 26th. Two screenings of the film: 7:00 and 9:30 pm. SHARP - no lengthy previews to wait out. (Individual tickets to the two film screenings as stand alone events are $8.50 and include tax and processing.) August 25-26 (Repeats September 1-2; 8-9)….CATS Playhouse Presents: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” - In August and September, CATS Playhouse will transform into the most enchanted forest in all of theater in Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” When the merry sprite Puck meddles with a magical love potion, young lovers lost in the woods mysteriously find themselves infatuated with the wrong person in this hilarious, fairy tale fantasia that proves the course of true love never did run smooth. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors - and can be purchased at www.catsplayhouse.com or at the door. CATS Playhouse, 2257 34th Street; Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

(Repeats Sept.9-10)….Moonlight Musicals Presents: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - This show finalizes the 12th summer season of Lubbock Moonlight Musicals in marvelous style! Featuring many of the stunning songs from the film starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers will set your toes to tapping and have you humming “Bless Your Beautiful Hide” for days! Set in 1850’s Oregon Territory, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers tells the story of young newly-wed, Millie, and her husband, Adam. In trying to convince her six brothers-in-law to marry (and move out), Millie faces the trials of teaching them about “goin’ courtin’”. The plan goes slightly awry when Adam reads to his brothers from Millie’s book on “sobbin’ women” and they decide to kidnap six young ladies to be their brides! August 26…10th Anniversary of West Texas Warbirds - This event features scale models of military aircraft in action. Aircraft from practically every era of military aviation conflict will be represented. Spectators are welcome Saturday, August 26th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Best viewing time is during the noon-time line up - where spectators will have the opportunity to walk the flight line and pit area to view the aircraft up close and talk to the builders and pilots. Be sure to vote in the People's Choice Award. General admission is $5.00 for adults, Kids 12 and under are free. BBQ Catering onsite by J&D Catering from Lorenzo! Bring your cameras, lawn chairs and sunscreen. Please note, this is a fair weather event and aircraft may be grounded due to excessive winds or inclement weather. August 26....The Roundtable presents: Ashley Marin - Guadalupe-Parkway Sommerville Centers "Programs that Work With Youth" - Our luncheons are held at Hillcrest Country Club 4011 N Boston Ave, Lubbock. North on University past State Living Facility to Newcomb, left for about 4 blocks and you will come to the entrance of the Hillcrest Country Club at Boston and Newcomb. Meeting format: People arrive about 11 a.m. to start registering, pay for lunch and some socializing. Food service starts at 11:15 followed by introductions and announcements at 11:30.The speaker will start about11:50 and be finished with the program and questions from the audience by 1 p.m. The public is invited. Lunch/attendance is fifteen dollars ($15) per person. Limited menu includes beverage and dessert. There are no membership fees or dues associated with attending the functions. Any extra monies that you would like to contribute will go towards the speakers lunch and towards our Honors College Scholarship fund at Tech. Our Saturday luncheons are a great way to (1) learn more about current global/US/Texas/Lubbock issues and events, (2) meet other people in area who may become lifetime friends (3) feel more at home in Lubbock. August 26….The Life and Art of Lucian Freud with Christian Conrad -
Lucian Freud (1922-2011): Considered one of the most important individuals in modern figure study, British artist Lucian Freud created realistic paintings that had thick textured surfaces. A deeply private individual, Freud mostly painted his friends and often their pets, but reached a level of notoriety to be considered one of the most influential British artists. Although famous for his realism, Freud’s early work is characterized by abstraction and surrealism. Join us as we journey through Freud’s work as he moves from an avant-garde style to the realistic paintings for which he was made famous. Saturday Lectures at LHUCA is an informal conversation over the life and work of contemporary artists. It’s a stress-free opportunity to examine the art and ideas that underlie much of the modern art world. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and join the conversation. American Graffiti is a 1973 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed and co-written by George Lucas starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Harrison Ford, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins, and Wolfman Jack. Suzanne Somers and Joe Spano have cameos. Set in Modesto, California in 1962, the film is a study of the cruising and rock and roll cultures popular among the post–World War II baby boom generation. The film received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1995, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
