February 24 – 26….American Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Obedience and Rally Trials - The South Plains Obedience Training Club of Lubbock, Inc. will be hosting 3 American Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Obedience and Rally Trials at the South Plains Fairgrounds, Merchants Building. Approximately 100 purebred and mixed breed dogs from 4 surrounding states will be judged at this event from 9:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm each day. Many of the top obedience trained dogs in the country will be competing. Each exhibitor and dog team will be judged at one of the three different levels of competition; Novice, Open or Utility. These dogs will be demonstrating their proficiency in such exercises as heeling, high jumps, broad jumps, retrieving and scent discrimination. The dogs are working towards various AKC obedience titles, obedience trial championship points and national rankings. The newest approved AKC obedience related sport, Rally, will be held at this trial. Rally exhibitors will be competing at 3 different levels of difficulty; Novice, Advanced and Excellent. Each dog and handler team competing in Rally will complete a routine filled with a variety of modified obedience exercises which includes 360 and 270 degree turns, jumps, heeling backwards, serpentine heeling and more. Each routine is new and different each day. There is no admission fee charged for this fun filled and educational event. February 24 - 26 (Repeats March 3-5)….Lubbock Community Theatre Presents: “A Raisin in the Sun” - Set on Chicago’s South Side, the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans, however: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. Sacrifice, trust and love among the Younger family and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration. Winner of multiple Tony Awards in the original 1960 production, as well as the 2004 and 2014 revivals. Written by Lorraine Hansberry and directed by Joshua Aguirre and Ronnie Miller. Rated: PG-13. February 25….The Roundtable presents: 25 Joe Marnell Ph.D. Adminstrator of Facility & Information Systems Wayland Baptist University - Lubbock: Identity Theft and Resistance to Using Multi-Method Authentication in Public Access Environments - Our luncheons are held at Hillcrest Country Club 4011 N Boston Ave, Lubbock. North on University past State Living Facility to Newcomb, left for about 4 blocks and you will come to the entrance of the Hillcrest Country Club at Boston and Newcomb. Meeting Format: People arrive about 11 a.m. to start registering, pay for lunch and some socializing. Food service starts at 11:15 followed by introductions and announcements at 11:30.The speaker will start about11:50 and be finished with the program and questions from the audience by 1 p.m. The public is invited. Lunch/attendance is fifteen dollars ($15) per person. Limited menu includes beverage and dessert. There are no membership fees or dues associated with attending the functions. Any extra monies that you would like to contribute will go towards the speakers lunch and towards our Honors College Scholarship fund at Tech. Our Saturday luncheons are a great way to (1) learn more about current global/US/Texas/Lubbock issues and events, (2) meet other people in area who may become lifetime friends (3) feel more at home in Lubbock. Most wear business or business-casual attire. No RSVP is necessary. February 25….The Lights Fest - What happens when you combine thousands of families, friends and foodies, with live music, dancing, and an eruption of Sky Lanterns? – Welcome to The Lights FestTM, an experience where thousands of friends and families gather to listen to live music, fill up on great food, and light up life by sharing their personal wishes, dreams and goals. February 25.....Family Film: "Saving Faith" - This is a family-friendly, romantic comedy which features numerous music stars and other personalites making cameo appearances, including Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, the Gatlin Brothers, Buddy Jewel and more. Other stars include Henry Cho, Scott Hamilton, Victoria Jackson, and Jim Chandler. “Saving Faith” revolves around Faith Scott and her Uncle Donny. Faith is the Executive Director of the Ritz Theater in the small Tennessee town of Clinton. After years of struggle to keep the doors open it looks like it might be time to shut them for good. In one last ditch effort to keep the theater alive, Faith and Uncle Donny look to put together a big fundraising show to save the ship. From there....it's all about having - and saving - faith. February 26….TTU School of Music Celtic Ensemble Concert - The Celtic Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Christopher J. Smith, will reprise their alter ego in their first concert of 2017 as the Elegant Savages Orchestra, dressed to the character of the "Mysterious 1885 Steampunk Band." Their program, "Springtime in Bassanda," will feature songs, tunes, and dances celebrating the coming of spring in the mythical and exotic land of Bassanda. Free, and open to the public. February 28….Mardi Gras 2017
- Lubbock Meals on Wheels is presenting the 18th annual Mardi Gras Celebration. This spectacular event will include more than 37 food booths (with selections from your favorite local restaurants), live music by the Element, a large silent auction, cash bars plus a variety of activities and prizes. Colorful masks and beads will be available to make the evening even more festive. Everyone will also enjoy a variety of additional entertainment and flamboyant decorations in the official colors of purple, green and gold. The expanded Children’s Area includes bouncers, climbers and face and hair painting to keep the kids entertained.
