January 5….The Harlem Globetrotters 2017 World Tour -
The Harlem Globetrotters are a worldwide icon, synonymous with family entertainment and great basketball skills. The Globetrotters represent nine decades of breaking down barriers, acts of goodwill and a commitment to fans that goes beyond the game. The Globetrotters’ show features even more amazing basketball skills and wizardry, with a continued focus on family entertainment. For their 2017 tour, basketball’s greatest innovators will debut basketball’s first-ever 4-point line, a move that comes six years after the team unveiled the first 4-point shot in the history of the sport. January 6….First Friday Art Trail - See the regular art venues...plus the exciting monthly additions showcasing art and artists downtown and throughout Lubbock. Catch a trolley or bus at many ofthe locationsor pick up a FFAT map at any of the venues to see the art that can be found throughout the community each month during the event. First Friday Art Trail trolleys run continuously in downtown Lubbock during FFAT hours. Trolleys are free and you will find a "trolleyteer" on each trolley who is a treasure trove of info about FFAT and the arts in Lubbock and will help you navigate with ease. The trail runs throughout downtown and the Depot District from 6 - 9 p.m.

January 6....Art Film Friday: Two (2) Free Screenings of "Big Eyes" - Witness a bit of history this Friday night as the Cactus Theater debuts its new, silver screen and digital, state-of-the-art projection capability. To kick things off in the new "cinema era" at the Cactus, the 2014 film "Big Eyes" - directed by celebrated director Tim Burton - will be screened at both 7:00 and 9:30 pm - free of charge - to coincide with the activities taking place downtown for the First Friday Art Trail. This film, based on the true story of artist Margaret Keane - an artist who came to prominence with her original works of art in the 1950s - and who struggled wth legal difficulties after her husband took credit for her works in the 1960s. This film is rated PG-13. Reserved seats for each screening. January 6 – 8 (Repeats Jan. 13 -15)….Moonlight Broadway Presents: “Tarzan” – The 2016-17 Moonlight Broadway season is proud to present the high-flying musical, TARZAN® swinging onto the stage of the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre. TARZAN® is based on the Disney film and features all of the popular Phil Collins songs from it, as well as many new ones written by Collins for the stage version. Adapted from the 1914 story “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this Moonlight Broadway production is a classic-with-a-twist. TARZAN tells the story of a young human boy (Tarzan) raised in the jungle by a tribe of gorillas after his parents are killed. Never quite fitting in with the tribe, Tarzan is very intrigued by the similarities he discovers between himself and a young naturalist (Jane) he rescues in the jungle. Soon, Tarzan’s loyalties to his gorilla family and the attraction he feels for Jane are tested as he realizes he must choose between the life he has known and a future with Jane. January 7….The Roundtable presents: President of Texas Tech, Dr. Lawrence Schovanec - Our luncheons are held at Hillcrest Country Club 4011 N Boston Ave, Lubbock. North on University past State Living Facility to Newcomb, left for about 4 blocks and you will come to the entrance of the Hillcrest Country Club at Boston and Newcomb. Meeting Format: People arrive about 11 a.m. to start registering, pay for lunch and some socializing. Food service starts at 11:15 followed by introductions and announcements at 11:30.The speaker will start about11:50 and be finished with the program and questions from the audience by 1 p.m. The public is invited. Lunch/attendance is fifteen dollars ($15) per person. Limited menu includes beverage and dessert. There are no membership fees or dues associated with attending the functions. Any extra monies that you would like to contribute will go towards the speakers lunch and towards our Honors College Scholarship fund at Tech. Our Saturday luncheons are a great way to (1) learn more about current global/US/Texas/Lubbock issues and events, (2) meet other people in area who may become lifetime friends (3) feel more at home in Lubbock. Most wear business or business-casual attire. No RSVP is necessary. January 7….David Bondt: Artist Talk: Into the Mystic – “In my current series of works my focus is on exploring themes of what is sacred, giving room for a variety of perspectives. I view this as including a sense of connection to something bigger than myself; this can apply to having simply a deep sense of aliveness and interconnectedness. My hope is that as you witness these small glimpses "into the mystic" that you too may embrace the possibility of being intricately connected to the infinite." The public is encouraged to attend this talk and coffee and donuts provided. LHUCA. 511 Ave K; 11:30 am -1 pm.

January 7....Elvis' Birthday Tribute Concert - Join a fabulous cast to celebrate the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" with many of your favorite Cactus performers, including: Jeff Bailey, Addie Bleu, Haley Simpson, Jason Fellers, Amber Pennington and Avery Guyear - all backed by The Rhythm Machine - in this new, original production. You'll enjoy a trip down memory lane as we present songs from Elvis' wide catalog of material...with many of the songs drawn from his early classic recordings at Sun Records and the early days at RCA. You'll hear early favorites like "That's Alright", "Hound Dog", "Blue Moon of Kentucky"....and of course, "Jailhouse Rock", "Return To Sender" and "It's Now or Never"....then through the late '60s hits including "Suspicious Minds", "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love." This tribute promises to be a standout to kick off 2017...so don't miss this salute to the one and only - Elvis Aron Presley. Reserved floor seats $20; standard balcony $15.
