April 19 (Opening reception); Full day event April 20…. Lubbock’s Fourth Annual Spring into Green Conference - The theme of this year’s conference is “Water: The West Texas Update.” The free opening day event takes place on Thursday, April 19, from 5:30-7 p.m., at Rawls College of Business, 703 Flint Avenue. Keynote speaker will be Brock Dolman, Director, WATER Institute, Occidental Arts and Ecology Center. The full-day conference takes place all day Friday at LHUCA, 511 Ave. K. The $25 registration fee includes a Chipotle lunch and a speaker's reception. One of the major parts of it will be an all-day, drive-through recycle event, where recyclables that are difficult to dispose of such as plastics (All of them from 1-7), batteries, light bulbs, electronics/electrics (anything that has a plug), plus the usual (glass, newspaper, phone books, aluminum, tin, etc.) will be taken from your car and properly disposed up -- a one-stop convenience. April 20….Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture and Performance Series : Lecture and Performance Series : Billy Collins, former United States Poet Laureate - Billy Collins has managed to combine critical acclaim with broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in a variety of periodicals including The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and The American Scholar, while his last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry. In June 2001, Collins was appointed United States Poet Laureate and in January of 2004, he was named New York State Poet Laureate. Collins has published nine collections of poetry, including his most recent, Horoscopes for the Dead. A collection of his haiku, titled She Was Just Seventeen, was published by Modern Haiku Press in fall 2006. He also edited two anthologies of contemporary poetry: Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry and 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Everyday, both a widely used resource in American high schools, was the guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2006, and edited Bright Wings: An Illustrated Anthology of Poems about Birds, with paintings by David Allen Sibley. There will be an opportunity to meet Billy Collins at a book signing immediately following the lecture. This program was funded in part by the Sybil B. Harrington Endowment for the Arts of the Lubbock Area Foundation. April 20-21….Lubbock Moonlight Musical: “Camelot” - Lubbock Moonlight Musicals brings you the unforgettable thrill of a journey through time and the chance to be involved in a breathless romance! Set in an age and place where honor and chivalry reign, Camelot follows the love triangle of King Arthur, his Queen Guinevere and the ardent champion of love and battle, Lancelot. April 20-21….Celebrity Attractions presents: “Shrek The Musical” - Based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to life on stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre - not a handsome prince - shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek. Featuring a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery. April 21….4th Annual Meadow Mile - Proceeds assist The City of Meadow to build a community basketball court. Kid's ".Walks include 5k"(three tenths of a mile) for age 6 and under, 1 mile run/walk and 5k-professionally timed. Registration is $15 and includes a t-shirt. Registration is at 8 a.m. and races start at 9 a.m. The same evening at the Meadow Music Hall from 7p.m.- 11 p.m. join the kid friendly concert/dance featuring Gary Nix & West Texas in a smoke and alcohol free environment. April 21….Science Spectrum Pet Palooza - What does becoming a pet owner “en”tail? Children up to age 5 and their families are invited to visit the Lubbock Children’s Museum to learn about different kinds of pets, choosing a good pet for your family, and how to take care of them. Special community guests will be on hand to show off some amazing pets as well as visit with families about choosing and taking care of new pets. Activities will include: a Teddy Bear Repair Workshop where you can bring your own stuffed animals in need of a little “TLC,” demonstrations of Agility Trial and trained dogs, as well as service animals and therapy dogs provided by the South Plains Obedience Training Club and other pets such as cats, turtles, fish, rabbits and ferrets will be on display to showcase examples other animals from the pet world. So stop by for this very special event that’s purrrfect for your family! All Pet Palooza activities are included with standard museum admission. Free for members and children ages 2 and under . Kids' Fun Fair 2012 - Presented by the Lubbock Fun Club and Lubbock Home and Family Magazine, this annual gathering will take place in a new and exciting venue for our event: Main Event...so there'll be fantastic fun around every corner and at every booth represented! Expect to spend a fun-filled day learning about the best that summer has to offer...and enjoy the arcade, bowling, laser tag and mini golf while you're there, too! Kids' Fun Fair 2012 allows business owners, parents and their kids the opportunity to learn about each other...and the diverse products and services available in our community in a lively, energetic environment. Vendors include: pre-schools, summer camps, private schools, churches, children’s party entertainment services, community health professionals and a wide variety of family-friendly businesses. The fair will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21st and the event is FREE. Located in the back party room area at Main Event, 6010 Marsha Sharp Freeway; 10 am - 3 pm..


April 21….3rd Annual Fly & Fling - Participants of all ages will enjoy this fun-filled day dedicated to things that fly including Frisbees, hand-made kites, stunt kites, and giant kites. Try out the Frisbee obstacle course, make your own kites and watch one of the best kite teams in the state perform aerial acrobats set to music. April 21….Hub Performing Arts School: Fairytale Feast - Join your favorite Fairytale characters Snow White, Belle, Cinderella, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, and more for a fun morning. Tickets are $15 and include a concert by the characters, reserved table with character of your choice (first come first serve), a fun craft, cupcake and pictures and autographs from your favorite characters! April 21…."Bark and Purr Fest" - The Haven Animal Shelter is hosting a "Canine Carnival." There will be a dog walk, food (catered by Raising Cane's), raffle prizes, games, pet photos, and more! Tickets are $7/person (children under 3 are free). 100% of the proceeds from this event will go towards a new building for the current residents. Bring your dog, family, or just yourself, and join in on a day out at the park! Maxey Park, 4007 30th, 11-3 p.m.

April 21….HOPE Community of Shalom "From the Heart Music Festival" - This will be a inspiring afternoon of great music featuring Kenny Maines, The Others Brothers, The Wade Parks Band, True Blue, Mark Wallney & Mike Pritchard. All are invited to the benefit concert for HOPE Community of Shalom and the ministry of serving the Heart of Lubbock. Tickets: $15 @ door/ Kids Free. Come hungry. April 21….Cactus Theater: Tribute to the All-Time Great Country Groups and Duos – Music from Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Charlie Daniels Band, Brooks and Dunn, The Judds, Statler Brothers, Diamond Rio, Lonestar, Sawyer Brown, Tammy and George, Conway and Loretta, The Highwaymen, Highway 101 will be featured. The Lubbock Texas Rhythm Machine, along with Jeff Bailey, West Garza, Amber Pennington, Jordan Sheets, Dustin Garrett and others with perform this tribute show. April 21….Texas Tech University Jazz Festival Concert – Special guest saxophonist Dick Oatts is now a Steeplechase recording artist and has six Cd's released as a leader. (All of Three, Standard Issue, Simone's Dance, Standard Issue vol. 2, South Paw, Gratitude). He also has a CD out on the RED label with bassist Dave Santoro entitled Meru. Dick has 3 CDs as a leader on the DMP label with pianist and a co-leader Garry Dial. For 30 years, Mr. Oatts has appeared at college jazz festivals as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada, South America, and the Middle East. Oatts is a professor of Jazz Studies at the Boyer School of Music at Temple University and has been an artist-in-residence at the Amsterdam Conservatory since 1997. South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is needing volunteers anytime of the week and/or weekend. You will be trained on how to care for the wildlife....no experience necessary.
